There are no power or USB ports on this United flight. 😕

@ian@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey I know the plane I'll be flying on (Southwest 737-700) won't have 'em, and TBD how crappy the WiFi will be, but at least we'll land closer to the rental car area.

Just #voted early for the first-ever appraisal board position elections in Travis County. Naturally the polling place was a ghost town.

Folks should vote, if only to prevent someone across the aisle from having an outsized impact on what's likely a low turnout election.

Is there any tool that will spit out cyclomatic complexity of a PHP file that has no functions/methods defined? phploc doesn't attempt to calculate values for the file itself (probably "you're too far gone"), at least with the arguments I know of.

Maybe @afilina knows...

...and here's a video of #eclipse #totality. Pretty fun to have seen two solar eclipses in pretty much optimal locations (clouds today notwithstanding) in less than six months.

4m 25s of #totality in Fredericksburg earlier today for the #eclipse, 1.02+ magnitude. Was pretty cloudy here but the sun peeked through enough that what we saw was pretty awe-inspiring. Maybe @Tylae will post some pix that she took (I didn't have a filter on my phone so I only took stuff near/at totality).

there is almost no cell coverage in arkansas apparently so here are two screenshots until i can bake the timelapse. was surprised the wide angle was able to capture it being a ring!

our phones gave up on sos mode and even switched to satellite which i've never seen before.

@bobmagicii Wait hol' up they actually connected to sat? Maybe AST or Starlink were doing testing er sum'n.

Another #LastWeekInAWS gem: https://ec2.shop/. Does what it says on the tin, with an API. h/t @Quinnypig for highlighting this in this week's newsletter.

Just now catching up on #LastWeekInAWS because it's...been a week...but https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2024/03/aws-compute-optimizer-ec2-rightsizing-recommendations/ is pretty cool. Basically lets you tell Compute Optimizer that your app will fall over if you have less than X amount of RAM left, and Compute Optimizer will fit RAM less tightly to compensate.

Spirit Airlines WiFi seems to route through AWS us-east-1 now. Still the speediest WiFi inflight that I've used, though I haven't been on a Starlink equipped plane yet.

ok here is my last apple rant for the week: the m1 is not nor was ever fast.

it might have been fast to people who had apple things before.

but getting work done with the gpu, even the gtx 980 with the most basic cuda support is lapping the m1 in both image and audio generation.

and the rtx 3060 isn't even fair to race against. it does in 37 seconds what the m1 could not finish in 10 minutes (text-to-speech).

that said, it all worked easy first try did not have to fight it. just not good.

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@bobmagicii You're comparing a stock M1 to a dedicated GPU pulling 100+ watts?

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@bobmagicii So...which Apple Silicon chip in which machine?

If you're comparing a fanless M1 (max TDP for the SoC is like 10W) to something that has a power budget 10x that for the GPU alone...yes, something with the power budget around that of an IGP is not gonna fare as well.

And if you are indeed comparing an M1, that's two generations old at this point.

Is Apple Silicon overhyped? In some cases, yes. But make sure you're comparing it to a comparable thing.

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@bobmagicii "But Apple doesn't have anything with dedicated GPUs anymore"...okay, so you're saying that Apple no longer has gear that's comparable to Wintel...er...Winvidia gear. Which is a completely fair thing to point out.

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@bobmagicii You still haven't told me what mac you're benchmarking against ;)

The reality distortion field is still real, but...some of them are actually solid machines. Not leagues ahead of PCs perf wise but depending on form factor and such may be better. One fun trick is gaming on battery for more than 30 minutes ;)

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@bobmagicii I mean, you do have literally the lowest-end Apple Silicon Mac, and it sounds like it's the passively cooled one, so your max TDP is 10W, and that'll trail off a bit for anything sustained. Comparing to a machine with thermal headroom ain't a fair fight, and Macs that have the headroom do perform better.

If you got a current gen Windows box with a 15W CPU you'd wind up in the same situation.

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@bobmagicii I didn't look back far enough in the thread for screenshots as, well, I don't make it a habit following people around the internet singing Apple's praises. Of the last four machines I've bought, one has been Apple Silicon and one has been an Intel Mac /shrug

How to cause an #LLM to hallucinate: ask it which phones support n70 (the #5G band).

"The Galaxy S22 supports n70"

lol no it very much does not, #Gemma 7B.

For the people who care about #5g stuff here, apparently my phone can do pretty well on mmW. This is downtown Austin last night, on 400 MHz of AT&T n260 (38 GHz), anchored by 10 MHz of B5 LTE. Latency isn't great, but throughout is.

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@shortwavesurfer2009 mmW can do about 1200 feet with a normal phone from my experience, depending on how sites are placed, and with FWA gear of course range is even better. But yeah, the best use case is stuff like conference centers, stadiums, and airports for consistent usage with mobile UE.

Mastodon, according to the user count bot, now is 15 million accounts strong. Based on the last week's growth rate, we'll hit 16 million early-mid July.

I'm guessing phpc.social will have 4700-4750 users by that date.

ian, to random
@ian@phpc.social avatar

phpc.social just hit 4500 users, slightly before the Mastodon user count hit 15 million. Thanks to everyone choosing to make this instance your home on the fediverse!

As a reminder, server costs aren't free, and our OpenCollective proceeds exclusively go toward the various costs involved in maintaining this instance. For those of y'all who've donated, thanks for your support!

ian,
@ian@phpc.social avatar

@ronnorthrip @ramsey We've used server notifications for "the server is going to be down for a bit" or similar high magnitude announcements, and occasionally pointing people at events in the PHP community. And we have a persistent one about donating, but once people sign up and see that they won't see the notification back again.
