Re: bill C-18

I'm 1000% good with government taking fees/fines when businesses are doing something profitable that causes public harm.

I don't agree with government using public pressure or otherwise compelling businesses to do something (e.g. carry links to news articles), and then extracting fees/fines for doing that thing.

This is the most Ayn Rand thing I have ever said in my life.

Due to some questionable life choices, I need to use PHP/MySQL for the back end of a simple web app. In particular for user authentication.

I'm coming from Django (which I like) and .NET MVC (which is OK I guess). Which PHP framework will I vibe with the best? I see words like "Laravel" and "Symfony". Are these any good?

@thetyee I'm not sure Google/Meta/etc are trying to "subvert the intent" of bill C18. If you tax something, people will do less of it. #C18 taxes link sharing, so the platforms are going to share fewer--or no--links.

I'm no fan of giant corporate transnational for-profit platforms mediating information sharing, but crossing your fingers and hoping said for-profits won't respond to financial incentives this time never seemed like a great bet.

"Canadian wildfire smoke". Yes let's do the "as a Canadian I'm built to say sorry" jokes but also we really should be.

It was explained to us clearly and plainly for decades that this would happen and what the solutions were and we chose not to do them because they were hard.

Sorry. Really.
