Da blir det Ksenia som skal dekorere Fribygda.no for oss! Hun hadde såvidt den største heiagjengen.

Jeg har kontaktet Ksenia idag og vi har blitt enige om at hun kan starte med sketching i april.

I mellomtiden foreslår jeg at folk begynner å tenke på ideer for hvordan de ønsker at Fribygdas bakgrunn og ikon kan se ut ☺️ ikon blir f.eks. symbolet som vises i fanen i nettleseren, samt en emoji, mens bakgrunnen er coverbilde, evnt kan det brukes til bakgrunn for hele nettstedet (med litt CSS)

Da har #Fribygda hatt 2 uker hvor våre kjære medbygdinger har deltatt i en prosess med å velge en kunstner for å dekorere oss alle.

Etter 2 uker har vi hatt hele ---17--- unike demokratiske deltagere som har kommentert eller sagt ifra om hvem de liker. Noen liker mer enn en kunstner, og det er absolutt helt greit.

Så hva lener folk mot? Både Urokråka og @katnjiapus hadde sine beundrere, men @zicon og Ksenia har vært de mest ettertraktede kunstnerne. I tall er interessen:

Så burde #Fribygda gå for Ksenia?

17 deltagere er ca. 1/3 av serverens aktive medlemmer. Men kan vi løfte den demokratiske deltagelsen enda høyere? Eller bør vi gi oss her og si oss fornøyde?

Jeg tror vi kan gi det minst en uke til, og prøve å se om vi ikke kan løfte deltagelsen til 25 personer, eller ca. halvparten av serverens aktive medlemmer.

The SPAM wave has caused ppl to beg for server providers to start acting like police officers, like a Zuckerberg or Musk, to resolve the issue

The problem is that now action is being taken without consent from the perceived affected servers. On , a moderation-task automation script has been run. And now we've opened a Pandora's box about what sorts of future, nonconsensual interventions, that providers will allow themselves.

In short: this is a dangerous precedent.

First, it's not a "massive security risk". It's a nuisance, quite different.

Second, nobody's server is "being taken over", not even the affected servers. Admins on those instances choose to be absent, and their absense is being exploited.

Third, on unaffected servers admins can simply restrict affected servers. You talk as if there's some form of contagion, but that's not how it works. It's not a self-replication virus.

Fourth, the problem isn't that action is being taken, but that it's nonconsensual action.

Fifth, affected servers can choose to restrict non-affected servers, and the community has already actively mobilized to do just this. This server has also implemented those restriction lists - but voluntarily, and with minor changes due to some servers on the list no longer being affected.

My community is a Masto.Host client and I'm their admin, why do you think I care so much? We could be affected by the next time masto.host decides to play police!

I'm not talking about mastodon updates, I don't mind those, I mind masto.host running automatic moderation scripts on our community without consent!

Since the beginning of the recent spam attack https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/111953045633249137, I have been monitoring Masto.host and, when possible, taking action to mitigate the effects of this attack.

All actions I made should have minimal impact. Still, in cases where that was not so I have communicated those actions to the admins. So, if you have not received my email, no action was taken on your server.

Then it's better to momentarily take the server down and to let the admin know, than to interfere inside the server without consent.

The fact that you have a history of going into servers to enforce your own moderation rules is appalling and only shows that the problem of provider policing is more severe and that you don't respect your clients on an important point.

If authoritarian coercion in server moderation is the real price we pay, it may indeed not be worth it. That is a question we will have to ask ourselves.

Anything can be rationalized in the name of a greater good, but I don't want my community to become a victim of the next greater good. That's why there should be a separation of concerns.

You can sign up for having your server invaded, but I shouldn't lose my choice not to.

@mastohost Okay, but how do you define a spam attack? And are spam attacks the only thing you'll enter our servers to automatically moderate?

What I experience is someone suddenly using a lot power I never thought they'd use, and now I don't know your boundaries anymore. I don't know what could happen or what you could rationalize doing because somebody else pushed you to.

That's not a boundary, or if you tried to make it boundary, it is no boundary at all - you may allow yourself anything in the end, and we'll just have to take it.

Because we have no power in the end.

However, there's also the fact that Masto.host is a big provider. I don't know the numbers, but I've thought that maybe you are the biggest single provider of them all.

This means that your actions may affect the whole fediverse, not just the individual server.

Your actions could shape the fediverse to some extent. Even voting with one's feet may not escape the reach of your power then, as you, like the tech billionaires, have control of our relationships.
