2024 gaming backlog no. 4 - DBZ: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 (PS2)

A huge improvement over the first. In-fight transformations, 5-character teams, more accurate attacks - this game almost has it all. Main bugbear is the overly long story mode that tries to cram in every fight and winds up a bit draining.

Band Backlog 2024 - Megadeth!

Early Megadeth kicks serious ass. Peace Sells is a love of mine, but Rust in Peace remains a bonafide thrash classic - a near-perfect album!

The 90s start strong with Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia, but then quality takes a serious drop. There's a few decent songs, but it takes until 2004's The System Has Failed for Megadeth to get good again.

It's a brief reprieve - everything after that is middling and dull.

Band-Backlog 2024! Korn

Nostalgia fueled this listen-through. Not super into nu metal but pre-00s Korn is genuinely good; Follow the Leader and Issues remain great records with a lot of exciting music.

Mid-00s a bit of a dud - couple of ok singles though. In the 10s we hit Path of Totality, an electronic-metal fusion record that sounded more fresh and interesting than anything from them for a decade! Paradigm Shift also a solid chunky alt-metal album but post that is dry.

Took the time to listen to all of Ghost recently. Love the earlier stuff, like a Satanic, doom-fuelled Blue Oyster Cult. Later records a bit more arena rock-y - still good, but didn't hit the same.

Best records: Infestissumam, Meliora, Prequelle

@jae absolutely - even with their modern stuff I think Forge's grasp of imagery and aesthetic is phenomenal. I bet they'd be incredible to see live!

New review! 268 - Final Fantasy VIII

This week we finally play the controversial moody middle child of the PS1 era Final Fantasies as well follow a bunch of child soldiers on a twisting journey through bad scripts, overly complicated experimental gameplay mechanics, and, worst of all, Laguna Loire.

3 - The Simpsons: Hit & Run (PS2)

Played because of nostalgia, but it should've stayed in my memories. Exceptional references, world design, etc, but a dreadful game to actually play with little mission variance and wild swings in difficulty.

@Hundstrasse it's a weird one. As an accurate adaptation of the gold era of the Simpsons into a game format, its genuinely perfect and worth looking at for that alone and that's what I had remembered from it. I'd very much forgotten about the repetitive and crappy main missions!

@Hundstrasse oh for sure - I had a bad time playing H&R but not a bad time being in its world, if that makes sense. Not played Rugrats or Futurama but likewise I'm very curious about them!

I spend a lot of my time watching cooking reels (yes, I know, terribly sad) and now for some reason my feed is filling up with vegan recipes and goddamn I am going to try some of these. Never entertained the thought of going full veggie or vegan before but maybe...?

@Meadhbh I'm not veggie personally but my wife is so I cook vegetarian at home, but I often find myself eating meat when we're out. Might be nice to try and cut it entirely 🤔

An impressive GTA-at-school that manages to give a compelling open world, a fun story, and a creative twist on Rockstar's usual crime story, but these days is hamstrung a bit by 20 years of mechanical and social progress.

A brilliantly fun shooter/hack and slash that is elevated massively by its absolute adoration of the source material. Making you have to fight to regain health is a fantastic choice!
