2023 gaming backlog: no. 46 Final Fantasy VIII (PS1)

A divisive entry and for very good reason. FF8 is a great example of fixing things that weren't broken, offering a plethora of overly-complex mechanics that draw the game out to a crawl and a nonsensical plot filled with irritating characters.

@rotfarm More power to you - I'd never dream of telling anyone they can't enjoy a game 😅 I'd love to have been able to go into this without the context of other Final Fantasy games but as you can see from my review list, it's very much not my first one! Be interested to know how much that affects things when folk play 8!

2023 gaming backlog: no. 45 Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call (DS)

The same wonderful puzzling/VN gameplay as ever, although 4 games in it's apparent that some of the puzzles are wearing a bit thin and repeated. A nice prequel, but I'm not a fan of the ending.

2023, games beaten: no. 44 Pokemon Sun / Moon (3DS)

Much better than I remembered it being. Some gripes around Pokemon distribution, environments, and I'm not 100% on Z Moves. Absolutely wonderful characters though, especially the truly abhorrent main villain. Great!

Haven't picked Atraxa up to play since June. This year whenever I think I might dismantle a deck, it always winds up going. I adore a Maze's End deck but I'm always the only player excited by the win and that's not the environment I love in EDH.

@jb Thank you! It's one I really enjoy playing, and was adapted from an old Golos list I kept until he got banned. My problem is that as much as I love it, Atraxa presents so much value that I rarely find a pod that likes the way the game goes with her in it, and no one but me enjoys the endgame when I hit Maze's End so it's a list that I guess I'll wind up retiring soon

2023 games beaten, no.43 Star Wars Battlefront II (PS4)

Campaign + DLC beaten which in fairness is all I care about. Actually not bad - uninspiring gameplay / level design and feels tacked on, but a neat story centred around a couple of enjoyable characters. Love that it's set immediately post Endor, which is a bit under-explored in current Star Wars stories. Worth it for the sub-£5 sale price tag.
