Sunak ISN'T having a day off but nobody is entirely sure where he'll be or what he'll be doing.

😂😂

@JackTheCat After the wonderfully symbolism around the Titanic I am hoping he has time to visit other museums featuring great disasters. R101 airship disaster, maybe get photographed next to a Sinclair C5. Usually the UK lives an underdog. In this case....

@piglet @NormanDunbar @JackTheCat In a bike lane an updated version would be viable. Saw several brave souls commuting with them back in the day.They were too low to the ground to be safe in traffic. A segway upright arrangement might've been safer. I guess e-bikes are now where the C5 wanted to be. Fair play to Sir Clive for trying but the technology wasn't there yet.

The sun is shining today, and Apple Music has just shuffled up this absolute beaut from Royksopp.

It’s whisked me right back to lounging by a pool in Ibiza in September 2003, where I drank an ungodly amount of San Miguel while listening to this on my MiniDisc player.

Wonderful.

@DJDarren loved that album

@DJDarren I lost touch with Royksopp after Happy up here, I think but that album is a classic.

Just going to dump my mock Aussie outbursts here to save annoying my Aussie other half when I still say all the sayings no Aussie actually says:
"Bonza, rippeeeeeer, beaut mate."

I will however end with a legacy outcry from before I was even a thing from Auntie Jack, a tv character butch male who dressed in women's clothes and yelled in top strine:
"I'll rip yer bloody arms off"

Australia. It's a funny place.

@Bez_Lightyear rack off I hear. Flaming Galah I only even heard Alf Roberts from Home & away say. My fave one that stopped me in my tracks was "stop carrying like a pork chop".

Here (south of the USA) people won't stop talking and freaking out about the .

The noise is unusual and sounds for a lot of people like an alarm that has been forgotten. It is very loud.

It appears to be a treat for the chickens.

@compost luckily we don't have them here in the UK but they were common when I lived in Australia. Good description of the sound they make. Used to drive me to distraction.

DJDarren, to iPad
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Lots of -chuntering in the -sphere ahead of the announcements next week, and honestly, I think it’s Apple’s approach to the iPad that pisses me off the most.

It’s where it’s most obvious that they like money and don’t want to have to sacrifice any. So they charge £1250 for an iPad Pro that has the raw processing power to be an incredible computer, but they crippled it with iPadOS in order to incentivise people to also buy a Mac.

emsquared,
@emsquared@mastodon.social avatar

@DJDarren you'd think they'd hybridise MacOS now that both the desktop and mobile run on silicon. Maybe a thing like DEX that Samsung has on its mobile android, where it adapts to be a desktop OS too. But as you say, nope.

@DJDarren Please excuse my thoughtlessness. Forgot Apple only know how to sell these days rather than innovate.

I am depressed at the Scottish news today, our First Minister quitting before he was pushed out.

The SNP as a generally united force was the only thing holding back the tide of shit coming at us from Westminster, TERFs and other right wng malignancies. Trans Rights blowing up as an issue in the UK (Fuck you, American Christo-fascist dark money) struck a blow that cracked the party along ideological lines, and yet Sturgeon still managed to kept it mostly together, though you could definitely see sharks circling the bloodied waters. With her gone, feeding began in earnest.

Hamza was an average pick being the best of the options presented. But with him gone pretty much all hope of the SNP delivering another referendum or even maintaining the support for progressive policies like Trans Rights is now in serious jeopardy.

Kate Forbes, his hotly tipped replacement, is a christian fundamentalist and TERF sympathetic. If she gets the job all bets are off and I predict within a year we'll be having conversations in Scotland about those pesky abortion rights as well as watching things get worse in Scotland for the Trans community.

@Uraael Yep. Very sad. Sadly narrow mindedness is very contagious (and more widespread than we'd like to accept).

@tomorohhidari@mas.to avatar

Idea for a concept release:

Press a /acetate disc with "empty" grooves, i.e. no waveform, just a guide for a stylus and sell it with a bag of dust & hairs.
The listener can then create their individual vinyl - crackle silence experience

emsquared,
@emsquared@mastodon.social avatar

@tomorohhidari Hipsters would pay top dollar I'm sure. Can't remember which album came in a sandpaper lined sleeve so you ruined it just taking it out to play. A friend of mine was big into record fayres and bought "the wit and wisdom of Ronald Regan". Completely silent grooves (unfair really as way less competent presidents with zero wit or wisdom came after him)

Tidying inbetween catching up with last night's Nick Abbott on LBC. Lordy the gammon and gamminesses getting worked up about the England Nike logo. It's that side of England I just never got or ever felt a part of. Some of them are on the verge of exploding yet they can't tell you what upsets them other than they know they are very angry. #England #LBC

18+ emsquared,
@emsquared@mastodon.social avatar

@NormanDunbar I remember that incident but yeah a lot of it seems to be a manufactured outrage. Some callers connect it to their seemingly bursting sense of English mess but when you drill down or question them they don't seem to be able to tell you what it's all linked to other than it really is not what their sense of Englishness is all about. It all seems a very fragile sense of identity to me.

I'm not here to defend Meta or Threads. Fuck Zuckerberg.

But: if I wake up one morning and half my network is gone because a bunch of admins decided to defederate anyone who isn't enough of a purest about Threads, it's not Zuckerberg who I'm going to be mad at for ruining my Mastodon experience.

emsquared,
@emsquared@mastodon.social avatar

@maxleibman yep. Personal choice first. Granular rather than sweeping. Life is full of compromises. Purism feels good but it ultimately paints you into an ever smaller corner better moderation would negate blocking at the domain level. In my naive opinion of course. I reserve the right to act contrary to my idealism.

What y'all favorite album?
I got 2 , songs in the key of life and innervisions _ stevie wonder. My gramps got these on vinyl and played them over and over i remember as a kid. I just starting my vinyl collection and these are the first albums I bought! Classics and both released years before my ass was even born !

emsquared,

@AlexanderVI @Jaden3 Always thought Fame should've been on Station swapped with Golden Years(or a standalone single). Bowie dropped 2 great tracks on Young Americans (released in the 90s eventually) to put Fame & his cover of Across the Universe instead because of John Lennon's involvement (minor) on Fame. Prime time for Stevie Wonder in the 70s. Big influence. Bowie on Soul Train. Love that famous clip of Stevie playing live on Sesame Street too.
