i have a song in English and a song in Thai going round in my head except my brain is making up somewhat Thai-sounding nonsense for all of the English one and maybe 80% of the Thai one. took a wee while to work out where this new "OST" was from ๐Ÿ™ƒ

i think i need to have more conversations with English and Scots speakers.
ditching most podcasts means i hear maybe 20 minutes of English a day that isn't just me talking to myself.

Basic social contact.
This observation was on the back of my brain replacing English lyrics (the only language I'm fully fluent in) in a song with sounds similar to the language I watch most of my telly in.

my favourite character (shh don't tell him) in the story i used to write to cheer myself up is taking this whole resilience v optimisation thing Very Seriously and is determined to find an even more resilient way to paint something than squirt gunning paint onto the ceiling so it drips onto the cardboard on the floor.
they have a very resilient household.

i've worked out the names of all but two of the people here, including the semi-random dozen who weren't in the lakorn, even though the names are in modern thai script and all lookupable info to confirm is in standard script
was an interesting way to learn which letters i most often confuse like the round S one that's an r in the middle of a word and an n at the end except not always in names and the round S with a tail that's a th or a t.

writing hasn't been working for a few months now (well more properly playing) but the characters still hang out in my mind and every time i see a post about optimisation being detrimental to resilience, one of them smiles knowingly.

Is there really a store in the UK called poundland cause that sounds fake as hell

@gavi yes. you have dollar stores, right? same thing.

Pandora says it is the 30th anniversary of "Teenager of the Year," and I suddenly have a hankering to learn the bass line of "Speedy Marie." It isn't overly complicated, and I haven't played bass since junior high, but ๐Ÿ˜Š

Japanese Film Festival Online 2024 will be 5th-19th June (starts & ends noon JST so effectively the 18th for UK)
Last year's was really good so I'm maybe just a wee bit excited. It's a great opportunity to see Japanese films which can be hard to find.
I know all of you have lives and are busy but I can post about those I watch to help you pick one or two Please let me know if you are interested as it's better for me to save my energy than shout into the void.

Interesting lines about lovers in Murakami's book "after the quake" (2000) ๐Ÿง

What do you think?

emmaaum,
@emmaaum@zirk.us avatar

@OperaLab My music collection strongly disagrees with this assessment.
Is the character narrow minded herself, so she thinks this way?

It's Wednesday, so it's the middle of the week, but it's my first working day this week, so it's kind of Monday-ish, but then I have tomorrow off, so I don't know what is going on basically.

@sheepnik throw in a squirt gun full of paint and that would belong in my story :)

emmaaum,
@emmaaum@zirk.us avatar

@eclectech i was thinking earlier about a pigeon who i haven't seen for awhile. It invented showering in the rain. Extends one wing up so all the underneath gets rained on, and then the other. Back and forth several times.
I haven't seen it for a few months now. I hope it's just summering elsewhere.
Wish I could get a photo of it for you. None I've tried from the hoose have come out alright and they fly away when I open the door.
You would like this pigeon.

@sheepchase i got so excited about there being horror in the JFF+ for you that i didn't notice they're all shorts. None of them nor the directors are in the MDL database. One is the winner of the inaugural Japan Horror Film Competition. I'm betting the rest are runners-up.
Anyway, I can manage short ones. Even if they are Japanese and Japanese horror is too good :)
Maybe one a day? You pick.

I made an MDL list to help me prioritise. Some of the films have reviews etc. https://mydramalist.com/list/47av2YNL

@emmaaum@zirk.us avatar

@sheepchase they all won prizes in the Japan Horror Film Competition. i can add that to the list.
This is the best source of info I've found on these films (though I was looking for info needed to submit titles to the MDL database not reviews).

Building a watch party thread for a 12 episode series of purported interest to members of my dreamwidth comm has taken too much out of me for zero return.
Maybe someone might use it some day. Maybe.
The group has no common ground and isn't interested in giving some effort to change that.
The effort in this case simply being watching some of the same movies or telly.

emmaaum, to random
@emmaaum@zirk.us avatar

Accidentally ended up watching 3 series concurrently, started the 1st season of C-epic Joy of Life cause everyone is talking about it, realised i can subscribe to my 2nd favourite lakorn channel for ยฃ22/year, AND JFF+ online festival (in which I will attempt to watch 24 Japanese movies in 13 days) begins in a week.
Maybe it's a good thing I don't have a life?

The jackdaws in town were making an astonishing racket today.

The object of excitement was a chimney of the type that has a little roof on top and a gap under that before the main part of chimney continues downwards.

Anyway, about 15 of them were taking turns yeeting themselves through the gap and into thin air on the other side, sometimes catching themselves mid-plummet while their comrades cackled and cheered.

Sometimes several of them would, in their excitement, cram in all at once, resulting in a flurry of black wings as they tried to extricate themselves with a modicum of dignity. (Spoiler: there was no dignity.)

But they were mostly queuing up with reasonable patience to go on this thrill ride, and were entirely adorable.

@HauntedOwlbear The world would probably be a better place if more adult humans played like adult animals do.

The "pursuit" of happiness isn't about chasing things you're sure will make you happier. It's less a pursuit, really, at all, than it is the recognition of potential sources of happiness that are already in your grasp.

emmaaum,
@emmaaum@zirk.us avatar

@mishellbaker this is something i've had so much problem conveying to therapists (physical and MH). Don't make me waste precious energy chasing something i can't manage. Help me figure out something i CAN do/you can help me with in your remit.

online subscription to Channel 3 in Thailand is about $28 per year (USD i presume). that's really tempting even if i can't read the website. some of it HAS to have subs right?
note to self: next language in an alphabet i already know please.
self: ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿ˜‚

emmaaum,
@emmaaum@zirk.us avatar

@sheepchase At least there's one advantage of having tastes outside the western mainstream - I have no other subs and would rather give my entertainment money to Thailand instead of a third party service in a wealthier country that skims off the series I'm less interested in anyway because they're the closest to western mainstream tastes.
You obviously have other priorities ;)

Quite apart from being a bad idea on many levels, I'm amazed at its stupidity as an election policy.
