"World's biggest solar farm comes online in China's Xinjiang"
5 GW installed capacity
>800 km²
6.09 TWh a year
A single large nuclear power plant (EPR) produces twice the amount of electricity, on a speck of the land (0.09 km²). The Dutch government wants to build four of those. Energy density makes a real difference.
China is doing both btw, because solar (and wind) are faster to install, they have the room and the industry to pull it off.
The concept of “H2-readyness” has always been a con, that was hyped as an alternative against nuclear. Now we see some true limits.
The new gas combined cycle power plants proposed in Germany 🇩🇪 will only be able to operate by design with up to 50% hydrogen by volume, representing a reduction in GHG emissions of only 22%.
Nice overview of European countries that are eith pro or ant-nuclear, or somewhere in between. Italy reconsidering nuclear is a major shift and I think we'll see a colour change from Norway sooner rather than later 😉
"On this episode, John Stackhouse sits down with three nuclear leaders working to make SMRs a reality in Canada; Nicolle Butcher, COO at Ontario Power Generation; Bill Labbe, CEO at ARC Clean Technology Canada; and Heather Chalmers, CEO at GE Vernova.
"One thing is clear: nuclear power can be a key part of a lower-emissions future — and an increasingly promising option is to commercialize SMRs."
105 PDF illustrations of nuclear reactors from around the world (1950 to present) compiled by Michaël Mangeon from the Nuclear Engineering International series entitled The World's Reactors.
I have another series of reactor diagram posters, some of which should be added sooner or later to the University of Arizona "Nuclear Engineering" collection presented here. Two are from a German hobby magazine, and the rest from "Nuclear Power" (a British publication which ran 1953-63).
High-quality scans are on my Patreon, and I posted lower-resolution ones to Reddit.
📌 Watch the first of Hinkley Point C’s eight 520-tonne steam generators being delivered safely to the construction site over the weekend after arriving by sea, river and road.
@collectifission@IceCubesApp when does it crash for you. I tapped on your post and am replying here. Does it crash on send or on tapping the reply button?
The central committee of IDA made the following statement in a press release yesterday:
“In light of the technological development, it is IDA's opinion that the Danish Parliament's decision from 1985 not to use nuclear power in public energy planning should be changed, so that Denmark has an open approach to offering the most efficient fossil-free energy mix in the future.”
IDA is one of Denmark's largest trade unions, representing over 170,000 members within STEM.
Energy economist Björn Peters speaks with ESNA about an article in Cicero, The German’s Greens Scandal on the Nuclear Phase Out, and his insights into the matter, published on his own website. Björn Peters is a German physicist and energy economist, as well as the co-founder and CFO of the nuclear-energy startup, Dual Fluid Energy.
