If you want to stay on Windows 10 after 2025, it’s going to cost a lot $61 per PC :leafeonmoney:

Windows 11 isn’t that great, but forced to use it. Thankfully, I use Mac as my main OS as using Windows is painful enough.

@yon Apparently, I bought a Mac Clone off a Retro Mac forum. Not an 8600/9600, but one of those Power Computing Mac clones, and it is one of those models that used the same processor daughter card despite the logic board being based off a Power Macintosh 7200 design.

More on it later, but it looks like the RAM is the only thing I need to get since it has a SCSI2SD, although is it better to use a BlueSCSI one instead?

Also, it supports BeOS.

This afternoon, I created the second promo video to get more Japanese media related content creators and also Anime Bloggers onto our Mastodon server (and perhaps leave that birdsite). This updated video mentions that bird site eventually putting up a paywall.

https://skitch.chikorita157.com/mastodonadvert.mp4

I do plan to make videos to show users how to migrate their accounts to our server and even explain the new Mastodon 4.2 search features. Those will probably come next weekend.

The video has an invite link and QR code, which will bypass the approval process after approvals begin on October 28, 2023. Hopefully there will some tool built to bypass it by then, or maybe for testing. Doubt spammers will watch through the whole video to sign up using that method.

Most of the parts, at least the BlueSCSI, AAUI adapter (so I can connect it to the network), and a Sonnet Crescendo G3 accelerator because why not?

I probably going to need some gorilla glue or ABS cement just in case if any plastic parts.. and should be able to inspect the machine.

Should be fun, at the very least, although I am going to need to drop down the motherboard so I can take out the battery and do some upgrades.

@yon, did you deal with brittle plastics on vintage Macs before (I did at least with the 630CD)

Out of curiosity, I tested the Mastodon Autopost plugin on Wordpress with my Sharkey test instance, and well it works with their version of the Mastodon API. I can authorize with it and send a test post. This is something that does not work on Firefish, so at least there is one working autosharing plugin.

Sadly, the one built into Jetpack still doesn't work, probably has to do with their implementation of OAuth.

I know that there are reviews out on the Vision Pro, but you sure want my impressions from a non influencer on what I think about the device. I have watched some videos, but of course my experiences will be different.

I will give my thoughts after I used the device for a while. But I do have an Anker 737 Power Bank with 24,000 mAh power, meaning it can probably last 7x longer, but I would be carrying two batteries.

Still setting up the games on the Power Macintosh 8100. You might be wondering, why just use the G4 MDD.

With some older games, it might need 16, 4 bit, or black and white color modes, which the modern PowerPC Mac (G3 and G4) can't even do. I did run out of memory trying to load Macintosh Garden in Claszilla and Finder crashed, wanting me to reboot the machine. Also playing early and mid 90s games runs better on a period correct Mac.

Maybe maxing out the RAM might be a good idea, so I can turn off virtual memory for good.

The machine will fly when the G3 accelerator is installed.

@yon Is it me or the External BlueSCSI is picky when it comes to SD cards. sometimes I can get it to book and others, I can’t.

Maybe I should have gotten the internal one, but opening it up is a pain in the butt through (besides the plastics), but actually swapping cards. There are no SD card panel made for the 8100 or even the 8500, which uses the same case.

@yon I got this SATA card for the Power Computing clone that is coming soon, and this is practically the easiest card to flash, to make it work on a Mac. Just in case if you are interested.

Now Tumblr is apparently burning to the ground with it’s poorly handled moderation, it's a good reminder to just host your stuff and not rely on centralized platforms. It's a good defense against enshittification and of course drama like this.

The WordPress foundation is not controlled solely by him, and a lot of people work on the project since it's open source. Besides, I find WordPress.com too limiting and expensive. Self hosting WordPress is cheap and can be done on cheap shared hosting or a VPS. ClassicPress is also an option if you don't want the block editor, but it may have compatibility issues with certain plugins.

The plus side is that you have full control over it and even make it ActivityPub enabled, which Tumblr is probably not going to do

I do wonder, will Cohost will finally get the boost now that Tumblr is burning like that cartoon dog that say "this is fine.”

Sasayaku You ni Koi wo Utau Production Problems (Full Text)

While not posted here on the Fediverse, a user on the :deadbird: site has gotten in contact with a user to leak the problems the staff are working with while producing the anime. (Note: Some spelling corrections, source from Patstar_1999, OCR in text form) I may write a follow up editorial post on this over on my main blog at a future date.

Now updated with rebuttals.

The enshittification of Discord officially begins as it started to start showing ads. Can we move to something that people control and not Discord.

Also, a PSA, stop using Discord as the everything app. Forums, Wikis, XMPP, IRC exists.

Update: I know it's April Fools, but I am very suspicious if it happens again when it's not April 1st.

I had a panic attack when the server went down. Note that this appeared to be a network at probably affected the datacenter as I had difficulty accessing the support page.

Rest assured, the data is safe. The whole VM is backed up every day at midnight, so if anything were to go wrong, I will be able to restore it on a new server.

Still, while this may be a one off thing as this is the first time happening.

Note: The new chat server has nothing to do with the DDoS attack as it's hosted on an entirely different server. The hypervisor only hosts the Mastodon, Sharkey, and associated services related to them only, nothing else.

My Vision Pro is supposed to get delivered at 12:30 PM, but UPS never came and the time change to 7 PM. So much in trying to get the light seal exchanged.

I guess this is why people don't like UPS. 🙃

I did get the Newer Tech G3 card installed, but no video. Looks like I do need to pull the cache card as I'm having the same issue of no video from the AV card.as seen in this video featuring the same G3 accelerator card.

The 8100 is pain in the neck though. Should have probably picked up a 8600 instead, if there was any reasonably priced and good shape. I’ll figure it out on Sunday, and probably get a bottle of plastic cement if I need to glue anything back.

There is an interrupt switch I need to pull out, before I can slide and drop them other board.

Last point I want to make about the controversy over Mastodon Social being too big.

Mastodon Online and Social only makes up about 20% or 236K of active users (1.2 M according to joinmastodon.org) While it’s a big chunk, it’s certainly not the majority of active Mastodon users. The percentage gets even less when you add in active monthly users from other Fediverse software.

I think the main takeaway is that we should focus on getting as many people to the Fediverse as possible. If you don’t want them to join Mastodon Social, perhaps suggest them to join a server that you recommend to your friends that are on the fence.

If they join a big server, they can move later if they want to..Believe me, it’s hard enough trying to convince people to move from the birdsite to here.

I admit, TikTok is harmful for our society as teenagers do stunts like subway surfing, which can lead to death.

This is why I will never use TikTok and if I had children, will never allow them to use that app nor allow them to watch any short form content.

This is just sad and an unfortunate incident.

Finally cleaned the corner of my desk, which has the vintage computer corner of the desk, which consists of a Power Mac G4 Mirror Drive Door from 2022, a Macintosh 8100/100AV, to run older Mac OS games that won't run on Mac OS 9 or run too fast, and a custom Wintel (eww) Pentium III games to run older PC games.

The 8100 restoration is in it's early stages. I have a Wombat ADB to USB adapter to allow the use of a USB KVM switch, which allow me to switch between these three vintage computers seamlessly and switch the source on the monitor. The 8100 now sports an external BlueSCSI to boot from flash media with an AAUI Ethernet adapter to get new software over the network. There is no need to burn discs or use floppy disks to get software on there.

I'm not complete with the 8100 yet, Need to repair some stuff, upgrade it to a Newer Tech G3 Accelerator, and probably max out the RAM.

The custom Pentium III machine is not plugged in yet, need a DVI to HDMI adapter or DVI to Displayport adapter, but it will happen in the future.

I'm using a Sabrent USB peripheral sharing switch to share the keyboard and mouse between all three computers.

@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

This is what true enshittification of Windows 11 is, unless you pirate the enterprise version.

This really shows that we need more competition. Linux is not seen as an alternative given the lack of commercial software support (e.g. lack of Adobe apps, which is used in the creative industry, etc, along with apps that only work on Windows and/or Mac).

This is why I use a Mac instead of Windows, because I don't like Windows, but I have a laptop that runs Windows to run a few apps that are Windows only. But only having two viable choices isn’t that great, likewise with iOS and Android.

If only BeOS, OS/2, etc. was still a thing, maybe it wouldn't be this bad.

Also, Windows 7 was the last “good" Windows OS until it basically turned to crap.

Everything back together now with G3 goodness

I did discover that three clips that hold the front broke off already, need to glue them back at a later date, but the 8100 is mostly restored and quieter now as it only runs off the BlueSCSI, the HD is disconnected, but causes a slight about 10 sec delay when it cold boots.
