I wanted to refill my small gas torch, but the grocery store didn't have refill gas bottles.

..so I bought a bunch of cheap lighters with big tanks, and connected those to my empty gas refill bottle to drain them into it, and then used that to refill my jet torch :blobcatgooglyfingerguns:

dear dutch farmers: government regulations around nitrous oxides may be a pain, but realize that the south netherlands is currently MORE POLLUTED THAN FRICKIN NEW YORK, we are one of the most NO2 polluted areas in the entire fricking world, up par with South Africa, and I promise you it's NOT just the cars doing this

Did you know you can specify parameters with an if/else statement inside a function call in python?

e.g:
device = torch.device("cuda" if torch.cuda.is_available() else "cpu")

is completely valid in python3.

Reading into tuning cars, and slowly starting to get an idea of how it's done, and now I'm really tempted to buy a KESS v2 or KTAG or alike set to try and reprogram my ECU and see what I can get out of that little Twingo GT.

If I'm mistaken all you have to do is:

  • Take the ECU out of the car
  • Hook up the KESSv2/KTAG according to the pinouts you can find online
  • Backup the current mappings
  • Start editing the throttle/boost/injector/etc mappings
  • watch with OBD2 tools and adjust accordingly🔧

I actually kind of fear for India and similar regions. A record of 52.3°C in May is alarming, but what if August brings the world's first 60°C? Current records, mostly around 54°C from 2016 and some as high as 55/56°C from 1931/1913, show the trend. The 2015-2016 El Niño drove many of those extreme temperatures, and the ongoing El Niño, with average global temperatures at an all-time high, is being compared to that event. We need to help fellow people navigate the heat.

Oh man, I almost had a fire in the kitchen while I was at work;

  • I get home, loud constant beeping noise that turned out to be the induction hob, error E06, indicating it was overheating and shut off at some point
  • I had left a pan on it the day before, a clean one luckily, which now has scorchmarks and darkened anti-stick coating
  • the reason the induction hob turned on was because the extractor hood was LEAKING WATER onto the induction hob controls, turning it on while it was raining today.

If you think the public memes about Google's AI Overviews in Search were something, you should see the internal ones, basically everyone is asking what the hell is going on, asking if there was a dogfood/beta participation chance they missed, etc. It smells like the whole thing was a shareholders idea, though then again it's a large company, and I mean, it could've been fun at least, but the way it's presented makes me uncomfortable too, as much as I don't want to throw colleagues under the bus.

I messed up, accidentally broke off the dumpvalve instead of nulling it. It's very null now, and very good at dumping. Tried to fix it with ducttape, but...

Same area but the hole has been wrapped with ducttape (poorly)

I have a theory that people who dislike the caps attached to bottles, actually don't push the cap away far enough to click into resting position on the side, causing it to press against their face when they try drink from the bottle.

I don't see any other reason to dislike them anyway, if you use them properly they don't get in the way, it means you never have to look for or place the cap anywhere while pouring, you can't lose the cap, it means you can drink with one hand while e.g biking, etc🤷

Reminder for people who can't find a political candidate to represent them:

It's not supposed to represent you, it's supposed to be the least evil choice you manage to pick, and not picking anything, will usually result in the most inconvenient choice being picked for you.

Not voting is not a signal, it's aiming a gun at your own foot and giving someone else the trigger.

This also goes if your lesser-evil option has done very evil things. Lesser evil doesn't imply lawful good, unfortunately 😶

writing a chat thingy in NodeJS + clientside JS.. the idea is to make it as simple and foolproof as possible, easy to host, with optional end to end encryption that's entirely taken care of on the client. The server will just forward what it receives, optionally caching it and allowing clients to pull messages based on a timestamp delta. Everything will be 'groups', a DM with a friend is a 2 person group, a groupchat is a 3 person group, etc, to keep things simple. Probably add file/images later

Little secret about datacenter water usage: they actually don't USE nearly as much as they report-- they DRAW a lot of water yes, but they'll only cycle it a few times before giving it back, either through waste pipes or other ways, otherwise you get sediment buildup in the pipes and heatexchangers. The average golf course uses far more water, and actually uses it without returning any of it

And the alternative, is to use energy-heavy AC/heatpumps, which due to public outcry, is happening more.

Idea: set up a volunteers and donation-run server hosting platform, where you can apply for a free VM or container if you do not have much money to play with these things. Applying & verification would involve a short conversation with someone to get an idea of the situation and the needs, and off it goes. Running a platform like that wouldn't be very different from running a mastodon server in terms of moderation, you'd need to find a bunch of folk that'd help but it could be mostly automated 🤔

ordered a second hand 800w car alternator for 20€, want to try hook it up to my old exercise bike and see what I can get out of it, maybe charge some 12v batteries with it if it works

now to just get a v-belt and some mounting and tensioning gear, I already have a battery and charge controller that should do the trick, it'd be amazing if I could make this whole thing work for less than 50
