Judging by previous instances of this exact hypecycle, I predict it'll last 3-6 years.

I'd be willing to bet that by 2029 (maybe 2030) investors will be disappointed in generative AI & will largely cease funding any AI research.

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

@morten_skaaning This is a 2 tier hype cycle, so yes & no.

I was measuring from the release of ChatGPT in Jan 2023.

Lets see how many of Elf Utils' commands I have time to study this morning!

After initializing & internationalization whilst parsing commandline flags nm iterates over the remaining commandline args, handling the single-arg case specially.

For each it opens that ELF file recursing through ELF archives with surrounding output. For each leaf ELF file it initializes a prefix/suffix string & an LibEBL (in same repo) backend. Retrieving the E header it iterates over the sections.

1/2?

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

For each section it attempts to get the S header, checks its type is as expected, & for symboltables iterates over the "index" to locate teh corresponding "extended section index table" & outputs extensive & sorted ELF data in a choice of formats.

1.5/1.5 Fin for today!

P.S. I finished skimming Elf Utils' test suite this morning, took a while! Good!

@ekaitz_zarraga While I would say that the issue is less bad depending on where you live, it is fair to be concerned about the centralization!

There was certainly an issue in the blockchain hype that they were hopelessly wedded to their solution.

alcinnz,

@ekaitz_zarraga Yeah, on second thought this is one sort of post I was filtering out of my boosts when inundated with blockchain hype...

Now I'm commonly perceived as anti-AI, though that doesn't really capture the nuance of my stance.

And finally I'm thinking of their depiction of a charity ball: https://decoderringtheatre.com/shows/red-panda-adventures/red-panda-dead-or-alive/

"Dear heart, it doesn't really matter who benefits. Its just a socially acceptable excuse for a large & lavish ball!"
"Afterall, hard times call for hard measures. We're only the idle rich when we're not giving to charity!"
"This way people can read the society pages without feeling animosity towards who might have more than they do."

"Now, in the course of the term’s over 70 year history, 'artificial intelligence' has been applied to a vast and heterogeneous array of technologies that bear little resemblance to each other. Today, and throughout, it connotes more aspiration and marketing than coherent technical approach. And its use has gone in and out of fashion, in time with funding prerogatives and the hype-to-disappointment cycle. "

If you live in the UK or USA, you need to understand one thing about the coming election:

You need to vote defensively.

Neither of the main parties are appealing. But if you don't vote for the lesser evil you may end up helping a totalitarian horror get elected.

Hold your nose and goddamn vote, dammit. THEN go on protests. Because if you don't vote for the lesser evil, the victor will welcome your protests with bullets.

The prize for political purity this time round is a shallow grave.

To shape some of my upcoming writing...

For creatives: What software tools do you like? Why?

For wannabe creatives: What might you create given the time? Including time to learn?

For techies: Any such tooling you're particularly curious for me to explore?

The more answers I get the better!
And feel free to echo these questions back to me.

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

My answers to my questions btw...

I write plenty (both English & computer code), for which I use a plain text editor. I have some automation (via Jekyll), but I keep it minor. Sometimes I draw diagrams in Inkscape.

If I had a significant chunk of more time I'd draw animated visuals for The Red Panda Adventures. Krita or Blender Grease Pencil looks like good tools for that! Add occasional 3D animation (resembling The Incredibles) for characters who traveled back in time.

1/2

alcinnz,
@alcinnz@floss.social avatar

I'm thinking monochrome (generally grayscale, sometimes other chromes) designed to resemble 1930s/1940s live action, with splashes of colours. I imagine backgrounds would be detailed, with crowds for our superheroes to rescue.

As WWII breaks out I'd want to lower production quality leaving you nostalgic, as it ends add more colour!

Combined with preexisting audio, sounds like a relatively achievable project! And that's what I imagine best suits this show I love!
