'Just sick of the crime': Restaurants dealing with in an increase of people dining and dashing (winnipeg.ctvnews.ca)

“I can tell you that the people that are doing it aren’t the people who are coming here because they’re looking for a sandwich because they’re hungry,” said Ravi Ramberran, “It’s the people who are not afraid of consequences period.”...

From the actual post.

“I can tell you that the people that are doing it aren’t the people who are coming here because they’re looking for a sandwich because they’re hungry,”

Thing is, you’re not wrong either. The cost of living crisis does have victims, but the sort of people doing dine and dash are rarely those victims.

If anything they make it worse for people on low income jobs like waiting staff. Dine and dash is like the opposite of leaving a tip. It’s like reaching into an underpaid service workers pocket and pulling the money out.

It’s tricky, especially if we want to stay non-judgemental, but there does seem to be a difference between people trying to steal bread and flour from a supermarket and folk sitting down to a three course and running without paying, and I suspect that difference might be one of class and privilege rather than not.

Ps. Thank you for everyones takes on the first post. For anyone saying we’re to immature to be in a relationship

Literally no one said this. You said this before there were any comments at all. There were no takes when you wrote this.

@adam_y@lemmy.world avatar

Fair. I didn’t see that, but weird to add an edit to a repost/update than the original post where the comment had been made.

It is, thank you for letting me know.

Yeah, and sometimes thwings too. With a side of thlaw.

The WHO declared aspartame as a possible carcinogenic while releasing 'safe' intake guidelines. Turns out the WHO has members with a conflict of interest (Coke links). Wiki has nothing on this. Help?

Help writing something about this on Wikipedia? That way, unsuspecting readers can learn more about how Coke is a totally humane and considerate company....

From WHO’s report, which can be read here at https://www.who.int/news/item/14-07-2023-aspartame-hazard-and-risk-assessment-results-released.

JECFA concluded that the data evaluated indicated no sufficient reason to change the previously established acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 0–40 mg/kg body weight for aspartame. The committee therefore reaffirmed that it is safe for a person to consume within this limit per day. For example, with a can of diet soft drink containing 200 or 300 mg of aspartame, an adult weighing 70kg would need to consume more than 9–14 cans per day to exceed the acceptable daily intake, assuming no other intake from other food sources.

And really importantly:

JECFA also considered the evidence on cancer risk, in animal and human studies, and concluded that the evidence of an association between aspartame consumption and cancer in humans is not convincing,” said Dr Moez Sanaa, WHO’s Head of the Standards and Scientific Advice on Food and Nutrition Unit. “We need better studies with longer follow-up and repeated dietary questionnaires in existing cohorts. We need randomized controlled trials, including studies of mechanistic pathways relevant to insulin regulation, metabolic syndrome and diabetes, particularly as related to carcinogenicity.”

If I could give you ten extra points for responding like that I would. Instead, have my respect.

Now, I’ve just learnt that beer was involved too… So…

After a few years of every argument ending in “educate yourself” the people went out and decided that they could.

Unfortunately, education is best practiced by people who have an understanding of the subject matter. That’s whe teachers are valuable.

Now everyone is an expert and we have rampant conspiracy theories because a bunch of people consider watching one YouTube video degree equivalent education.

Yeah, playing the first GTA without a map, and where the navigation arrow points to the target as the crow flies, across a maze of bridges and dead ends.

Fun, frustrating times.

Do unfortunate circumstances surrounding a film affect your enjoyment of them? (endlesstalk.org)

Just watched 12 Monkeys (1996), and it’s a little uncomfortable seeing Bruce Willis portray a character struggling mentally, know of his real-life problems with frontotemporal dementia. It’s not the time of year yet, but I’m wondering if my enjoyment of Die Hard will be reduced, since the hearing loss he suffered on that...

adam_y,
@adam_y@lemmy.world avatar

Those are two very different examples…

For Bruce Willis, yeah, watch the heck out of his films and celebrate his talent and the joy and entertainment that he brought to us. Everyone ends up dead, and it’s rarely pretty, so perhaps we shouldn’t let it ruin our past.

However… Lee died during the making of the crow and that’s more complex. Was the film finished to honour his life and his skills, or was it finished purely for financial reasons?

I’d like to think it was the former, and that when we see a film it is never the work of one actor, not even a bunch of actors and a director, but hundreds of people all bringing themselves to the endeavour of making.

And that’s how they live for ever. Scratching their name into the desk of the world by making something that will be here long after they have gone.

And I think that should be celebrated.

adam_y,
@adam_y@lemmy.world avatar

And then the spacey thing… First, let’s not forget he just got found not guilty… Not saying he didn’t do anything, but a jury of his peers didn’t send him down.

Again though, should everyone that worked on those films lose their work because of him?

Classically trained film reviewers?

Not sure that’s even a thing. Sure, they were educated and well informed, still…

If you are after a popular film critic that really engages with the material, we have Mark Kermode in the UK. I might not agree with everything he thinks, but he’s consistent enough that you can use his opinion as a yardstick. I strongly recommend you check him out.

adam_y,
@adam_y@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, yeah, ‘classically trained’ means something very different here. My bad.

Star Trek executive producer wants more Strange New Worlds episodes, and I’m nervous (screenrant.com)

Strange New Worlds has been my favorite Trek since Next Generation, and if the quality continues, could easily be my favorite Trek ever. But with the e.p. wishing for more episodes per season, there’s a danger of diluting the show by adding weak episodes that would have never made it in a 10 episode season....

adam_y,
@adam_y@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve talked to some folk who work in TV about just this.

The upshot is that knowing the length of run with enough time creates better episodes whether the run is short or long.

The problem is something getting big and an emergency demand for more episodes after a season has already been planned out. (or that episodes need to be cut for a reduced run).

As for the BBC, we are still very much waiting for the clock to run out on Casualty, Holby City, EastEnders, silent witness…

I’d also argue that even despite a shorter episode length, Sherlock still managed to overstay its welcome.
