Spent the morning yesterday and today at the skate park with the kids. It feels good to be back on the board and spend some quality time with my kids. I might be old, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have fun still while getting some exercise :) #skateboarding #qualitytime

One use of AI assistant tools is as a souped-up search engine: you ask a question in natural language, and you hope that it will understand its data well enough to pick out the page that really answers your question, instead of pages that just mention some of the keywords. And you usually hope in vain.

So we should re-expand the acronym: these are 'Awkward Indexing' assistants.

@simontatham or shit librarian?

On that note, I'm spending some time over the next couple of weeks learning #Elixir to ramp up for my new role. I've already been recommended Phoenix's tutorials, hit me up with more suggestions if you have them :D

Unlogic,

@Catarina if it applies, livesvelte will make working with live views much nicer.
Also the pragmatic liveview tutorials are great.
Elixir casts are also worth watching.

ianRobinson, to passkeys
@ianRobinson@mastodon.social avatar

What account should I use as my first experimental login to convert to using passkeys?

PayPal?

I know you don't know what systems I use, so this is a bit of a meaningless question. But do you know of any popular systems that a lot of people use that now support passkeys?

Preferably ones that can be stored and used by 1Password 8. Maybe I should do 1Password first if they support passkeys.

@ianRobinson I have initially switched to passkeys for eBay and GitHub. Storing them with KeePassXC.

My previous poll about #Python special methods was too open-ended. Pick:

Unlogic,
@Unlogic@hachyderm.io avatar

@nedbat @dataclass will generate the init method.
It is still generating the init method for a class.

When you read or write about #Python's init() method, which seems right to you:

Unlogic,

@nedbat “the init method” when spoken. “The init method” when written. There’s only one per class so ‘the’ makes sense to me

Marking a milestone: just before our fifth birthday, we're celebrating 5,000 customers. Thank you to everyone who works on one of those teams, and to the hundreds of thousands of personal users too! 🚀 https://tailscale.com/blog/5000-customers

@tailscale much appreciation from another personal user. It really changed the simplicity of self hosting for me.

So... It has gluten in it? 🤔

(I know it doesn't really, just bad wording!)

@mikestreety it’s like saying ATM machine :)

Yumquotient, to repair

@ai6yr Since you are the only person I know that repairs things: I have old Energizer Weather Ready flashlights that are normally plugged in, switched to the position that keeps the light completely off, but will turn on when the power goes out. On several of them the light is no longer completely off anymore in that position. I have replaced the batteries. Any guess what needs to be fixed? #repair #RepairReuseRecycle #RepairCafe #EnergizerWeatherReadyFlashlight

Unlogic,
@Unlogic@hachyderm.io avatar

@Yumquotient @ai6yr @mjf_pro sorry to chime in but I love this kinda of stuff
The sensor will be exposed to the outside of the case to be able to detect light. From the photos this is a possible candidate
But the caps are a good and simple start IMO

Unlogic,
@Unlogic@hachyderm.io avatar

@Yumquotient @ai6yr seems to be the light yeah. Wasn’t easy to tell from before. Interested to see a hat the new caps achieve :)

Unlogic,
@Unlogic@hachyderm.io avatar

@ai6yr @Yumquotient any progress on the fix? Did the caps work?

Happy #internationalrepairday everyone. Go and try to fix something today instead of throwing it away. :)

@jasonnab I keep misplacing usb cables. Thankfully a cheaper and less impactful USB loss than yours
