This is a worry - live music venues being killed by huge insurance premium spikes.

Melbourne live music: Venues facing dancing bans call on government to help with insurance hikes

@timrichards insurance is getting hiked on everything. Must be a big contributor to inflation I’d reckon.

This may be the final ever upgrade for ol’faithful Sandy Bridge rig. 16GB isn’t cutting it anymore, and for $50 delivered I won’t be too mad if it doesn’t work.

@jpm must be good, the manufacturer’s logo is just a straight-up tramp stamp

Seeing that another cohort is aging out of the Hottest 100 (and Triple J listening more generally) and, as a millennial, let me just say: welcome.

Far too car-centric, that's its basic problem.

Docklands can shake its ‘ghost-town’ reputation. Here’s how https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/docklands-can-shake-its-ghost-town-reputation-here-s-how-20240126-p5f0ai.html

@timrichards The lack of trees and general seaside post-industrial bleakness is what makes Docklands suck, in my mind

It’s always a fuse.

ThermiteBeGiants,
@ThermiteBeGiants@aus.social avatar

@liamvhogan small brain: replace the fuse and everything will work fine
big brain: the fuse blowing is a symptom of something else happening, like a short, failing component or thermal runaway of some kind
galaxy brain: if it still works after replacing the fuse then nothing is wrong and the Machine God has been appeased. Continue as you were

Yes I'm at Melbourne's Southern Cross Station, about to head off on a proper shiny streamlined long-distance train to Adelaide (and from there by train to Perth).

As always, I'll be writing posts about my trip exclusively for my patrons at Patreon... feel free to join at https://www.patreon.com/timrichards

It is canon in my mind that the Sardaukar, a hyper-competitive society of ultra-violent servants of galactic Empire, whose traits supposedly are due to the prison nature of their planet, are Space Australians #DunePosting

ThermiteBeGiants,
@ThermiteBeGiants@aus.social avatar

@liamvhogan SCENE: Bathurst M, an Imperial prison world. Countless thousands of silent soldiers are lined up in front of a ziggurat, labelled “MOVNT PANORAMA”. Atop the ziggurat is an overturned AU Falcon, oil dribbling from it seemingly endlessly, running into gutters that route along and through the parade line of soldiers. Several figures in V8 Supercars-branded shell jackets are walking beside the soldiers, daubing the forehead of each soldier in turn with the motor oil from the car. In the distance singing can be heard: “Working Class Man” by Jimmy Barnes.

Daryl Kerrigan in The Castle (1997) was a NIMBY who loved electricity pylons, which seems logically inconsistent but is actually a quite accurate portrayal of what the average fairly-politically-unengaged person's views are about various contemporary issues.

Clip from The Castle (1997) of Darryl Kerrigan (Michael Caton) watering a plant with a hose and then staring up at an electricity pylon bearing down on his house with a proud look on his face

(this thought bought to you by this recent Tom Scott video on electricity pylons in the UK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0JDK_71yDg)

@grumpysmiffy I recommend having a look at @wongm 's website https://wongm.com/category/power-systems/ for blog posts on the subject that might provide some context. Otherwise, literally post photos at me and I will probably be able to tell you what the bits are (courtesy of one of my prior vocations and associated hobbies)
