I have just discovered that Spotify Desktop doesn't have a way to show a list of new episodes from podcasts you're subscribed to. "List new episodes" is literally the most basic feature I can think of. How is this even possible???

@Barredo But how can they spend a gajillion dollars on buying out podcasters and then not even let me list new episodes? The API already exists since mobile does it, it can't take more than a week and, like 2 people to develop this feature...

When people dismiss copycat designs by saying "there are only so many ways to shape a rectangle", they are wrong. Clearly some phone makers find distinct new designs, and then others find a way to very explicitly copy those again and again

Alt: a Realme phone that's a clear copy of an Honor phone that's a clear copy of a Huawei phone

Btw, a fun exercise in cultural relativism is to ask yourself whether copying a design is inherently immoral, or if it's just immoral to you because your specific culture says so.

While working in China I've seen again and again that Chinese culture traditionally doesn't really have the concept of intellectual property. Ideas, designs, etc. aren't traditionally thought of as something you can own, so they often don't see anything wrong with replicating them. They see that as simple iteration

@oblomov I agree, as economic incentives probably align with intellectual property protection at that point. But the cultural context makes me thing their embrace is going to be less complete even then

Done with a week of diving, so I'm back to having internet again. The red sea was fantastic again and the wreck of the SS Thistlegorm was an absolute highlight!

We still have quite a journey ahead, but with a bit of luck I should be able to post the next Friday checkout while on the go already ✌️
