The federal Liberals and NDP say conservative politicians are displaying a pattern of attacks against Speakers’ independence, an allegation the Conservatives in Ottawa strongly deny....
Some context on the Saskatchewan aspect that puts helps to understand the concerns being raised:
“Weekes also said Harrison once sought permission to bring a gun into the legislature. Harrison initially denied the allegation but resigned last week after admitting he had forgotten about the incident, which happened more than a decade ago.”
The CP photo caption says the incident happened in 2016.
While I’m still burning that SNW introduced the first main cast person with disability and killed them off just to lean on the crutch of development-by-death-of-mentor for Uhura, I’m super happy that Bruce Horak is now being regularly cast in guest star and recurring television roles in Canada.
It’s a long way from a Star Trek stint being a career-limiting choice as it was viewed in the past.
If the actors’ contracts are for 7 calendar years but production is stretched out as is has been due to the pandemic and the strike, it’s hard to see how more than 5 seasons are possible without severe escalation in labour costs for US talent.
One gets the feeling that Paramount senior management have been paying more attention to review-bombed scores on Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb etc. and YouTubers than to actual viewing minutes and audience size.
While Nielsen stats are only for the United States, it’s clear that Paramount has been doing vastly better by Discovery than any of the naysayers have claimed.
Contract length is a fair point. But so is the over reliance on US SGA talent in a show that’s trying to reach a global audience and represent a future that’s diverse.
Discovery had only five seasons but in calendar years, in which contracts are written, it was seven years from production of the pilot. So, regardless of the impact of the strikes, further seasons would have required higher salaries for Martin-Green, Rapp, Cruz and Wiseman.
One has to wonder if that was a consideration in the decision on Lower Decks as well.
Also, while federal and provincial governments give significant tax credits for the ACTRA-contract labour costs of Canadian and Ontario resident actors (50%), up until Rennie joined this season the Discovery main cast were all full SGA scale, although the seasonal ‘big bass’ have all been Canadian or resident since season 2. That can make a huge difference to the overall cost.
All to say, if talent salaries were the key driver of decisions, CBS Studios should put more casting in the hands of their Canadian casting director.
One has to then of Canadian/resident main cast will also put a cap on the potential number of seasons for SNW.
It will be interesting to see whether CBS Studios will go for the tax credit when they cast the cadet roles for Starfleet Academy.
The researchers did indeed discover a warp drive solution: a method of manipulating space so that travelers can move without accelerating. It’s disappointing in its limitations, yes, but another step in bringing warp-driven travel into a more mainstream conversation and line of theoretical research in physics.
As with Albucierre’s proof, theoretical research always starts with the corner solutions and odd cases to reduce the variables.
Well, now I know who was the executive on the org chart responsible for all of Viacom and more recently Paramount Global’s stunningly awful corporate strategic communications.
There have been a lot of senior or management changes one tier down since the merger, but perhaps what was really needed was for Baklish and his top VPs to exit.
Dr Who has consistently overturned British class expectations, which continue to reflect deep societal divisions.
It’s always been about representation but in a different sort of way than Star Trek. It recognizes that privilege does still exist, but the Doctor and their Tardis select companions on an entirely different basis, often just by luck.

I have absolutely been waiting for this to be released to Steam.
Finding games that I can share with our teens on Steam is challenging but important for keeping connected. So, we’re often looking for games that appeal to more than one of us. When we buy it’s 2, 3 or 4 keys. Having one for free to start would be great.
Resurgence really looks to offer the kind of role playing that makes sharing the journey in parallel fun.

Also it has participated in Doors Open Ontario which is an annual event for a few days in May, when many publicly funded or non-profit buildings that usually have restricted admittance, are open for viewing.
Seen in a place called Ollie’s, which buys up merchandise stores like Walmart can’t unload. I didn’t think it was worth the ten bucks. Ugly, ugly toys.
These are lovely and something a child might actually play with.
Not everything should or needs to be for collectors.
On the other hand, making preschool toys for show that was in the air more than a half century ago is bizarre. I would have loved these as a small child in the 1960s but the the toys should reflect a show kids would actually be watching now.
It’s been a while since I’ve watched the entire show. Unfortunstely, I’m already involved in some other binge watching of a show, so, I’d like to hear about your favourite episodes of TAS so I can toss them in between.
The whole run is less than 8 hours total, and there’s several episodes in there that really bridge between TOS and the movies and TNG, even if they’ve been cut down for the format.
But here are a few other suggestions…
‘The Slaver Weapon’ was written by Larry Niven himself, adapting his story ‘The Soft Weapon’, and making Kzinti a Star Trek canon species.
‘The Practical Joker’ gives us the holographic simulator in the Rec Room, and the first ‘space anomaly leads to computer misfunctions and Holodeck insanity’
‘Mudd’s Passion’ gives us Scotty and the Caitain second Communications Officer Lt M’Ress in an unintended romantic twist.
Uhura gets command in ‘The Lorelei Signal.’
‘More Tribbles, More Troubles’ is an essential part of Tribble lore.
‘The Time Trap’ and ‘The Jihad’ are great for showing off a wider range of sentient species.
I tested the waters over in c/quarks this week, and I’ve decided that between my own interest in hosting a Doctor Who community, and the new season/series/whatever starting up, I might as well pull the trigger....
After several decades of Whovians trying to convince me to join in the franchise, and several failed attempts to get into it, I’ve found a Doctor and companion who are holding my interest.
Sounds like you just haven’t been aware of what she’s been in.
She had a Best-supporting actress Oscar nomination in 2004 for ‘The House of Sand and Fog’ and Primetime Emmy win in 2009 for Outstanding Actress in a miniseries or movie.
It’s more the case that , as for Michelle Yeoh, older women seem to get meatier roles in science fiction and fantasy than in mainstream or art house productions.
I would love to see Shorleh come over to the Trek franchise in a worthy role. I can definitely see her standing out in the 25th century.
Hi there! I hope it’s ok to ask this here. I’ve been wanting to crochet an almost floor length cardigan, so I would need a lot of yarn. The pattern said they used a Level 4/Worsted weight yarn and had a gauge of 8 stitches and 6 rows on 4"x4". Now, I can’t really find out what equals as worsted weight yarn here in Europe,...
Yes, front side of the stiches only will make a significant difference, and a looser fabric.
But it’s also true that as we become more seasoned at crochet our tension will change. If you’re too tight or too loose, definitely do another test swatch with a different hook-size.
Last, while the measurements are for a 4x4” swatch, you really have to have a bigger square to get a true measurement of the tension. The edges do affect things. That’s why, I always go for a 6x6” swatch and measure inside of that.
Another helpful resource, although very much oriented to knitters and what’s available in the USA only, is yarnsub.com.
If the pattern calls for a specific yarn, and they have it listed (even discontinued yarns), this site can give good guidance on what yarn could be substituted.
