I think you’ll have to explain to most of the audience what a clutch is

“What are progressives going to do? Vote Republican?! HAHAHAHA!” - The DNC

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,

More evidence the US is not a progressive country and anyone who thinks it is will be disappointed by election results for their entire lives.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,

The real travesty is that this is a close election.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I’m a progressive who’s voted in every single election for the last 24 years.

I am not taken seriously.

while not alienating (too many) people on your flank.

You don’t have to worry about that if you consistently blame that flank for your losses. They won’t have a choice.

There are still blue-collar Democrats in Western PA? I thought they went extinct in the early aughts

Dammit Jim, I’m a doctor not a political scientist!

I wouldn’t even ask. I’d just assume they’re mad at me.

The original recommendation engine was amazing. Showed me stuff I loved that I would have never found myself. My favorite example is the French claymation acid trip called “A Town Named Panic”

Now all I get recommended are shows that are cancelled and that I’ve already watched.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

It wasn’t long after they “improved” the recommendation engine that I set up my Plex server so I guess it was successful?

I watched it because it was the top pick in children’s movies and ended up enjoying it more than my kids. I rewatch it every few years because it’s just so weird and good.

Another one is the TV show Oscar’s Oasis. It has no dialog, but a very Coyote-and-Roadrunner feel. My kids loved it and it was actually pretty funny.

But when we were at Disney World we ended up sitting next to a family from Brazil who knew very little English and their kids were watching Oscar’s Oasis and my kids immediately joined them.

Which if you think about it, really works to the advantage of the rural people the most, to have a slave low-wage-earning population forced to live inside the city, so that whenever the rural people deign to grace them with their presence, their fast-food burgers are at maximum cheapiness.

There’s plenty of people earning slave wages in rural areas.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I just wanted to counter the notion that people in rural areas (a) are all wealthy landowners and (b) want to go into a city at all. Some of the poorest people in America live in rural areas, and there’s not many of them that regularly travel multiple hours to get to a city.

If you had said it was suburban people I’d definitely agree. They’re the ones who are going into cities a lot more than rural folks, and they’re generally better off as it’s all single-family homes there. If the rural people are behind preventing a minimum wage increase it’s because they want to stem the depopulation from people moving to the city for better paying jobs.

I guarantee Scott Perry doesn’t give a fuck what I think about anything. And Fetterman and Casey disagree with me on this.

Scott Perry would happily be complicit in Palestinian genocide

I was wrong, he’s not resigning, apparently? Coverage of local races is notoriously horrible and Google is worse.

He also famously refused to meet with constituents.

He literally could not care less what I think, and has told me so in numerous letters I’ve gotten from him in response to believing “just write your representatives” would work.

ETA: He is currently up for reelection. It’s a red district so he’ll win. My neighbors scare me.

As someone who’s done a ton of work getting companies to be SOX compliant I have a fresh new hatred for our system of government. I get a new one just about every day at this point.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,

Instructions unclear. Went to my polling place to vote and they said come back in five months.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been voting for 24 years and have never seen this happen. They double down and that gets their voters even more fired up to vote.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

As someone with decades of experience in the tech industry we should stay as far away from electronic voting as possible. I know the sort of people who work on government systems and do not trust them or their code.

It’s less than 200 million votes, being counted and recounted in parallel by people all over the country. The problem of scale isn’t big enough to justify the security risks. I’m willing to wait a week to make sure the count is accurate and true with paper ballots.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

It really doesn’t matter how many square miles turn red, it’s the people who do the voting.

Inside of states for popular elections this is true. However, that giant area of red is over-represented at just about every level of government, from the electoral college to Congress to state legislatures.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I work with databases and don’t use master/slave because it’s not really accurate. Replicas break a lot, and the primary doesn’t have any control over them.
