I have to say I’ve never seen that and don’t realise it should be there. I only tend to find out when I try to comment.

Prking,
@Prking@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, it’s hard to provide screenshots because without commenting I can’t tell if a Post is locked.

I do too. They seemed like a good person. There were some mistakes but everyone makes them

Prking,
@Prking@lemmy.world avatar

I do hope they are okay. I don’t think they are the type of person to charge a premium amount for lifetime (which was controversial at the time) and then stop development. They seemed honest, so I am concerned that something has happened.

Do you mean an option to hide the tab bar at the bottom of the screen?

Prking,
@Prking@lemmy.world avatar

It is, check the OED.

Prking,
@Prking@lemmy.world avatar

It’s because the im isn’t a prefix but part of the word. (It was originally spelt empeche)

Prking,
@Prking@lemmy.world avatar

And @evgiz hasn’t posted in weeks. I hope everything is okay.

In non technical terms, some operating systems (eg iOS) will vouch that you are human. Which bypasses the need to click on things.

See support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/iphone/…/ios for details of how to turn it off

Yes, this (and some crashes ) seemed to start with v1.08

There doesn’t seem to have been any update since then

Prking,
@Prking@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure. There’s been no activity for two months despite big bugs like the crashing and lists being empty.

Putting aside that this use case doesn’t meet the five requisites for block chain use, the fediverse in general and Lemmy is already struggling with too much data being stored and moved.

Look up Egg Theory. It will blow your mind.

The answer is: do a job you like and do the things you like. I’m due to retire in ten years and won’t be doing so. I won’t work as much but I will work

It’s easier in some countries than others. But the key is not wasting time on things that you feel pressured to do because of societal norms or because you’re too lazy to do anything different.

If there was more than one Illinois, would they be called Illinoises or Illinoi?

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a word in English that ends with “is” while being singular, only plurals and uncountables come to mind, so I can’t really follow the examples of other words. What makes it even weirder, I’m not sure how to pronounce Illinoises… Would it be as written, or as if an Illinois was...

Basis becomes Bases Crisis becomes Crises Oasis Oases Echolalia Echolalies Etc Generally the vowel becomes an e

It was actually much easier than I expected. I used to smoke 40 a day about 30 years ago . One day I just decided to give up. The first few days aren’t that bad, you will get cravings but I found the best thing to do was distract yourself. Giving up while I was busy at work was a good way to distract my brain. After a few days the cravings get less and less.

What is harder is months down the line when you accidentally catch secondhand smoke. I couldn’t help but think “I’ve given up for so long, just one wouldn’t hurt”

It must be easier nowadays because fewer people smoke (in most countries) but back then it was common to see people light up when they left buildings.

Why do some websites have a "Continue Reading" button?

Some article websites (I’m looking at msn.com right now, as an example) show the first page or so of article content and then have a “Continue Reading” button, which you must click to see the rest of the article. This seems so ridiculous, from a UX perspective–I know how to scroll down to continue reading, so why hide...

Prking,
@Prking@lemmy.world avatar
  1. Some people prefer pages to scrolling (it’s amazing the strength of opinion about this for either point of view)
  2. Advertisements are charged per impression. So each page counts as a new impression
  3. Be grateful websites no longer auto scroll web pages
  4. Some things lend themselves to page by page. For example very long articles (this is why books replaced scrolls)
  5. Be grateful that websites stopped animating page turns etc
  6. Sometimes web developers don’t care and just use a bought in package

There we go, a strong opinion.

It depends also on what type of business. For example in Finance a consumer is a real person who buys/borrows uses something but a customer is a general term for a person, business, organisation or partnership that buys goods or services.

For example, I might have an account at XYZ Bank and so might a company. We are both customers of XYZ Bank but I am a consumer and the company isn’t.

[to complicate things small businesses might class as consumers in some jurisdictions]

The problem is that Tom has not been communicating. He’s the only one can do any upgrades and the only one who even knows where the server is.

We don’t even know if any backups are being done.

Prking,
@Prking@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed, there were signs at the start as well. I also think it went from being a fun hobby to real responsibilities as Lemmy grew.

Prking,
@Prking@lemmy.world avatar

IF we can persuade @tom to make one last effort to update to 0.19.1 then it’s possible to move your account to another instance. Obviously, the Feddit hosted communities would be run down. If we can’t as looks likely then you might be able to use third party software to transfer your subscriptions but it’s not reliable.
