Bitcoin and their ilk really aren't my thing, but many talk about the need for a digital currency. But here's the thing - we already have one, don't we?
https://kevquirk.com/we-already-have-a-digital-currency

PowellDean,

@kev For very limited use cases, I understand that a fully digital currency can be very useful:

  • People in Western countries with no bank account
  • People who live in one country but send money home to support family

In both cases, cutting out bankers, especially as cryptocurrency seamlessly crosses borders, can be a good thing.

But "banking the unbanked" (a term I hear frequently by crypto boosters) has a small ring of cultural imperialism to it. Banks are very much a Western concept

Every effing time I use a yml file I have problems. I just about abandoned a docker thing I'm working on because it wasn't working. No errors or anything this time.

The problem ended up being, as you all know, those effing spaces. For fuck's sake.

PowellDean,

@thelinuxcast As if yml itself isn't atrocious enough, now they've made a whole scripting language out of it: https://yamlscript.org

IT is moving backwards

Is #SmallTalk worth looking into these days?

PowellDean,

@draft13 In my opinion, as a long-time #smalltalk programmer and fan, it's still one of the most productive environments. #pharo continues to innovate, and #GlamorousToolkit pushes the envelope even further.

Learning any new programming language is a chance to see things differently. Learn Smalltalk and you may never look back.

PowellDean,

@kephalos @draft13 @sergio_101

Not to mention that offers functional-style programming as well. Want to filter that OrderedCollection?

result := anOrderedCollection select: [ :item | item ... ].
result := anOrderedCollection reject: [ :item | ... ].

Oh, and the Class Hierarchy Browser will spoil you for anything else.

Just curious...what about Pharo seems outdated? For my taste, Squeak's interface is too cartoonist.

Staring with 1984… let’s go!

#Books #Reading

PowellDean,

@britt “Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face — for ever… And remember that it is for ever. The face will always be there to be stamped upon.”

Frightening because it's true.

So I was out tonight and suddenly out of nowhere my #asthma decided to act up. It scared me. It’s been many many years since this has happened but started up again after we moved.

Do I have any asthmatic friends on here I can talk to about this?

I immediately had to go home to use my inhaler. 🤕

PowellDean,

@britt sorry to hear that. I am a lifelong asthmatic, and it nearly killed me in Grade 1. It can be frightening for sure.

Let me know what you need, even if that's just someone to vent to. I'll listen first and give suggestions only if you want them.

Best

It is so Alberta to have the government not issue my health card in my legal married name…but instead use a name I haven’t used in over 10 years.

GGs.

Update:
I’m very certain now that the person who submitted my documents at the Registry was being descrimatory towards us as a married lesbian couple.

They didn’t send ANY of my documents confirming my married name to Alberta Health, not even my BC documents in my married name.

So they issued it in my prior name I had as a student in ‘05.

PowellDean,

@britt Not defending the AB government at all as you should get your card issued in your legal married name. This seems to be a universal issue, not just government. Someone I know got employee stocks before they got married. They've been married over 30 years now and STILL cannot get the stock certificates reissued in their married name. They've run through dozens of hoops, all to no avail. You'd think this kind of thing would be easy

PowellDean,

@britt I hear you. It's unacceptable what they're putting you through

So, #YEG, I need a car insurance broker.

Us BC kids are overwhelmed by all the options 😆

PowellDean,

@britt Different insurance companies are great at some things, terrible at others (i.e. a company may offer lower rates but have non-existent customer service when you need it). The best advice I can give is to bundle all your insurance with the same provider. You'll get "volume discounts" that way. Prioritize your needs (is customer care really important? Is it just about low rates?) and shop around from there.

Not as useful as you were hoping I suspect.

I still think if you implemented something like #Smalltalk with the code browser, debugger and all of that using modern UI, which could allow you to package a project into a native looking app, you would really be onto something.

I also think you would probably be better off having it use #Ruby or #Python. I’m honestly not sure how to even start doing some thing like that in a way which wouldn’t take years, but if I did I might try.

PowellDean,

@collin If you're running Windows, Dolphin Smalltalk allows you to package your #smalltalk application as a stand-alone executable. I haven't tried it yet, but I believe a package like Cruiser lets you create native Linux or Windows executables using #pharo.

If you want a Ruby-like experience that compiles to an executable on Linux or Windows, have you looked at Crystal? (https://crystal-lang.org/). I haven't taken it for a test-drive in a while, but it's very interesting.

PowellDean,

@collin Gotcha. Both Pharo and Crystal are available for MacOS as well, in case you're interested. Both are under active development. A big thing for me is availability of third-party libraries. Pharo has lots.

Good luck!

After everything today I think I deserve to treat myself to the best poutine in town.

Where should I go #YEG?! lol

PowellDean,

@britt Cafe Bicyclette, in the French Quarter. I believe it closes at 9 PM, but check their Canada Day hours. Enjoy a nice local beer with it as well!

PowellDean,

@britt It's not in Edmonton, it's in Beaumont, but if you can make it there for a weekend brunch, breakfast poutine at Chartier is to die for.
