In spite of what I repeatedly tell myself, in spite of all common sense, I know that at some point I'm going to end up trying to write a new C compiler for EPOC16 from scratch. Probably Objective-C for the OO stuff, too.

I know that it would be an insane amount of work, especially for someone whose C knowledge is very basic and has never written any ObjC, let alone any 8086 assembly.

It may not be this year. But the seed has been planted in my brain. CTRAN was just the start.

Damn you, brain.

@thelastpsion I’m gradually getting on top of that overwhelm - my system’s in Trello - but now I may be taking on extra responsibilities so need to become a productivity ninja.. (wanted to get into Obsidian but last time I looked it didn’t work with Dropbox.) I’m getting better at being mindful of when a shiny new side quest appears, and going through the ditch/delegate/defer/do workflow.

The future is just going to be reading documentation to figure out how this particular environment that someone else has set up wants to deal with its database accesses because someone had a good idea and someone else fell for it, forever, right?

This rant brought to you by accessing Postgres from Typescript. Fuck I just want $dbh->quote(), is that so hard?

(And, yes, I'm muddling through this on MacOS, so apparently that involves compiling Perl from scratch.)

M0CUV,
@M0CUV@mastodon.radio avatar

@danlyke I’ve had that “AAARGH JUST GIVE ME DBI/DBD!” thought so many times in the last few years. Previous project in TypeScript was “improved” by an ORM.

I should probably look into translating an exported copy of my Wordpress blog into a decent static site generator’s input - for when Wordpress inevitably enshittifies or starts inserting Trump ads in page views.

M0CUV,
@M0CUV@mastodon.radio avatar

@timClicks it’s only a matter of time before it all gets used as input to train AIs, if it hasn’t already.

M0CUV,
@M0CUV@mastodon.radio avatar

@g7ufo thanks Neil, I may look at this combination- the risky / tedious part may be translating all my old posts to the new format, if nobody else has written such a tool (haven’t checked)… No huge problem; just need some Perl & regex-trickery :)

M0CUV,
@M0CUV@mastodon.radio avatar

@g7ufo If someone else has already written a decent converter, that’ll be a relief. Still recovering from the last one I had to write - mediawiki to confluence.

M0CUV,
@M0CUV@mastodon.radio avatar

@g7ufo just checked - it runs on Django/Python… I’d really prefer a completely static site, with just enough web server to make it work. Like GitHub pages… which might be an option, but last time I checked they used an ancient version of Jekyll (it was a faff to test locally).

In other news, I have started the descent into #retrocomputing by downloading Basilisk II in order to emulate a classic Macintosh SE/30. I looked briefly on eBay for a real one, but I doubt I could justify it - “what, MORE computers?!”

@thelastpsion Well I am looking at a book called “Apple Design”, the work of the Apple Industrial Design Group, and it’s really hard to not lust after some of their concepts.. an Apple Jonathan, for example.

@vk6flab all things I missed during “my beige years” (I was an Amiga user for many years; definitely not beige…). HyperCard, from what I’ve seen so far, is absolutely awesome - I wonder why it didn’t make the transition to OS X?

M0CUV,
@M0CUV@mastodon.radio avatar

@thelastpsion @NanoRaptor Yes, it would have been incredible. The Apple Design book shows so many products that were cancelled - ok some of them were way too “out there” :)

After months, my EO Pro Mini 3 charger has finally worked after being rewired “as it should have been done”! No more matt:e device, so the EO is having to cope with ongoing over-voltage problems. (And mis-diagnoses them as ground failures)… but I can finally charge my car!

I'm seeing quite a few requests for various non-existent paths on my website, things like /sftp-config.json and /bak/sql.sql

I'd like to mess with these and slow them down, anyone have tips on easy ways to do that on nginx?

M0CUV,
@M0CUV@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0YNG @k5dru @dl2jml putting them behind something like toxiproxy could accomplish this.

I seem to recall seeing an open source tool that could create randomly generated, but completely valid, BS code in a variety of languages - specifically for committing to a public repository, that bottom-feeding asshat AI scrapers could consume to “improve” the quality of their products. Of course I can’t remember where it was… can you remember?

Here’s a oddity.. I have an FT857&SignaLink that work fine for WSJT-X. I tried recording the audio with Audacity and even with its mic gain at max, recorded audio was very weak. I changed to FM, and used a low-power Baofeng to transmit some voice. S9+++ signal at the 857… but again, very low recorded audio. Turned up the RX control on the SignaLink, but not much louder recording. Do 857’s just emit very low audio through their “data” connector?

M0CUV,
@M0CUV@mastodon.radio avatar

@VE2UWY yes I thought it would be line level - but the signal recorded via audacity is just very weak.

M0CUV,
@M0CUV@mastodon.radio avatar

@javierk4jh @smitty @W1CDN yes I thought it was line level - and it works fine in WSJT-X, but trying to record this output with Audacity instead (even with its gain at max) gives a very quiet recording.

M0CUV,
@M0CUV@mastodon.radio avatar

@VE2UWY thanks for that! So it’s only millivolts.. presumably WSJT-X is amplifying it significantly but Audacity isn’t.
