So far loving @protonprivacy and the roll out to the family group is progressing well. Received the survey that apparently is a regular thing for Proton community members, asking some pretty good questions about what I am looking for as a user for them to focus their attention on... And then the inevitable questions about AI came up. 🙄 There are so many things that are missing from the entire suite that means I am hesitant to recommend Proton to others without a bunch of caveats, despite enjoying it overall, and they are instead looking to get some AI functionality added to it.

Please, please don't go down this path, Proton! AI bullshit is part of why I am getting Google out of my life and if it is seen as the exciting new thing by Proton, then it will also be the reason why I get Proton out of my life.

@protonprivacy to add to this, I absolutely love that you seek feedback from the community on various aspects of your offerings. I love that you even asked the questions about AI, but unfortunately I assume that my responses will be ignored if it doesn't suit what you think is an exciting thing in tech. I hope that you resist the techbro bullshit around AI and continue to focus on making really great software that is not burdened by these types of anti-person tech trends.

Unpopular confession: I don't enjoy modern black and white movies. I miss the richness of colour in a film that the director has chosen to do in black and white. I think the concept of filming in black and white as an artistic vision is pretentious slop. On the other hand I appreciate black and white drawings or charcoal etc. I feel like I have been spoilt by colour in film and the power behind the use of colour that there is something missing in a black and white film that could have been better done in colour. But I do understand that appreciating colour in a film as part of its power and art form means that I should also appreciate black and white and part of the same thing.

A recent example of the wonders I see in colour in a film is Poor Things (2023). I see the specific colours used in this movie as a magical part of the experience that would not have existed if it was in black and white.

@crocket2001 given that it was based on the graphic novel, matching the film to the novel made sense. However I think it would have been just as good, if not better in colour. In that case, making the film to be like a live action black and white graphic novel, definitely had its own specific impact. You could easily recognise the intention of the black and white usage where it cut between high contrast black and white with varying shades of grey and splashes of red and high contrast white to add to the overall look and feel.

Another film I can see possibly being OK in black and white is Godzilla minus One. I can see how the usage of black and white ties into the original Japanese Godzilla movies, but I will still see that in colour as I think I want to see the colours around Godzilla and the battles and action. Just happy that I get the choice with that one. I will likely see the black and white version also though as a comparison.

Anyone have any recs for a gaming rig running Linux? Wanting to also run Unreal Engine 5.0 dev environment for academic purposes. Trying to see if there is enough support for games via Steam on Linux using a relatively good system.

Prefer to build a system from components rather than a prebuilt system, but not a deal breaker if there are good prebuilts available.

The system will be used by someone that is not a power user and new to Linux, but they will have some support for various aspects.

Feel free to boost.

    Ooh, that's interesting. I was able to follow a Mastodon account via the #PixelFed app that was a private/locked account and I was able to view their follower only posts despite not having been approved by them. Seems like a bug @dansup.

    Additionally if the account rejected my follow request, #PixelFed app still showed me as following them and I could still see their followers only posts. 🤔

    Finally if the account actually blocks you, #PixelFed app will still show that you are following them and you can still see the Private (Followers Only) posts. So it doesn't seem like there is any way to prevent a PixelFed app account from a seeing the followers only posts.

    @kitclaw it also can't just be a PixelFed bug, right? I mean ok PixelFed is not respecting the private followers only posts privacy, but why does it even get the choice to or not? Why can it still see posts from an account that has a block? It shouldn't even know they exist right? Because if the PixelFed app can make the choice, then it means it is nothing more than a flag on a post or account that can be ignored by any app/script.

    @lynnlasabre @kitclaw it would appear to be more about the app that is being used, but does seem possible to build a Mastodon app that can ignore that. I mean you would likely not see any action from someone you have blocked, but they might still be able to see all of your posts, even comment on them. You just won't see the comments, but others will.
