Pondering the publishing gimmicks of my childhood:

  • Pop-Ups (sometimes with bonus sliding/rotating)
  • Scratch and Sniff
  • Red-filter secrets
  • "Invisible ink"
  • Flexidiscs
  • 3D w/paper glasses

There were others, but those I actually enjoyed. Some, I was not the target audience for (like "panels of fur for some goddamn reason").

My only nostalgic pang is realizing the flexidisc is the most deaddy deadest, because only hipsters and hardcore collectors have phonographs anymore. 😮

While I'm mucking about with ways to make my little chess dudes out of recycled plastic (I've been using a plaster-concrete concoction), I realised I could probably switch the process and make plaster molds, and slipcast the pieces.

Which classes them up enough I'd likely feel good about selling them!

Test mold #1 formed perfectly, though I forgot to add a well for extra slip....

Johnnephew,
@Johnnephew@dice.camp avatar

@LeviKornelsen I am very curious to learn more about this process

I would like Mastodon to have quote-posting. I like it because sometimes a toot makes me think of something on a tangent, and I would like to explore the tangent and acknowledge what sparked it without cluttering the original thread by going off-topic, which seems rude to the original poster.

Last week we (#ReplayWorkshop) received, free, a full trailer of 275 gallon IBC bottles, already washed, pure HDPE (white or natural), for #recycling with our #preciousplastic shredder. 90 of them in total, about 47 pounds each.

A local trucking company accumulates more than they can sell or reuse. Payment from previous recycler dropped to be less than the cost of labor and transportation. They were delighted to have a local place where they could just bring the trailer and see it emptied.

Johnnephew,
@Johnnephew@dice.camp avatar

@masukomi it'll be three pallets tops in expect. Probably less. It's pretty thick so it yields nice chunks with food density.

    @LeviKornelsen I think this is a good analogy.

    Like blogging in the hands of an insightful journalist or amateur journalist, I think gen AI can be a tool that expands possibilities in valuable ways. But it also means that it becomes more difficult to discern value.

    In the past, the economic chokepoints in production and distribution (editorial choice in traditional media, for example) meant that the individual consumer had pre-screened choices. (Alt POV: info controlled by gatekeepers.)

    @Johnnephew@dice.camp avatar

    Pro tip: You're not going to get us to give you a special wholesale price on our top selling games because you say you need to pay us less in order to match the price of other 3rd party sellers on Amazon you want to compete with. Your inability to make a profit in Amazon's #enshittified system is an #Amazon problem, not a problem with the time-honored keystone discount.

    Ordered one of these Monday and it just arrived. Very curious to see how dense it makes LDPE and HDPE films and bags. #recycle

    I need to try actually shredding them but these pucks of LDPE/HDPE look promisingly dense

    Johnnephew,
    @Johnnephew@dice.camp avatar

    @masukomi We have two #PreciousPlastic shredders -- a small one and a Pro model. You can get used industrial ones for cheaper, but often those require 3-phase power.

    If you want to go the Precious Plastic route, various outfits make and sell them through https://bazar.preciousplastic.com/

    Johnnephew,
    @Johnnephew@dice.camp avatar

    @masukomi I'm afraid the options for making recycled filament are all really expensive too.

    Prusa recent collaborated with Precious Plastic to set up a directory of microrecyclers who will take 3D printing waste. (Reminds me I need to put us on it.) Maybe there is a place close enough that you could drop off waste and at least keep it out of landfill.

    Amazon's stupid catalog system has struck again, rewriting the title of Dice Miner to be "Atlas Games ATG01480 Dice Games, Multi-Colour" because that must be how some third-party seller had it identified in the Title field in a a spreadsheet or API connection.

    Not sure if this is better or worse than all the Ars Magica books whose images have been replaced with miniatures acrylic paint bottle photos.

    It's launch day for our Enigma kickstarter, at 10 AM central US time! Three diverse puzzle-game books, and some really cute add-ons (Grogar plushy! Big plush steampunk d20!) made of recycled plastic! https://www.atlas-games.com/enigmaks

    Another day, another reminder of the inadequacies of Kickstarter in handling international shipping and taxes.

    Johnnephew,
    @Johnnephew@dice.camp avatar

    @masukomi I haven't looked closely enough at their VAT handling. But just trying to account for permutations of pledges and add ons in Kickstarter...either you're undercharging some people or overcharging others, or both, and neither one is conducive to success.

    If someone properly kicks my ass in an online argument, fully backed up by clear facts, I will often change my mind!

    Probably the next day!

    And often crediting myself instead of the person who changed my mind!

    But I'm getting better: I used to ALWAYS credit myself, and didn't even realize that's what I was doing.

    So clearly I'm becoming a better person.

    Just as a "content warning," as I've been privately cautioned that "publicly messing around with an LLM trained off scraped data isn’t a good look for a publisher," I'm likely to continue talking about generative AI and experiments with it because part of the reason to have this, a personal Mastodon account, is to hash through things I'm thinking my way through in a place where I may get input from others. Don't feel bad about muting or unfollowing. This is a place of free association.

    Johnnephew,
    @Johnnephew@dice.camp avatar

    @chemoelectric Exactly. Rather than encouraging a flowering of creation, the result is to concentrate creative ownership and find new ways to collect rent from it.

    I am leery of schemes to "improve" that involve complexity, overhead, and effectively mean they can only be implemented by large corporations with deep pockets for the few properties that justify all that expenditure.

    Johnnephew,
    @Johnnephew@dice.camp avatar

    @chemoelectric Now I'm going to go looking for that font. I've been using Google Books on my phone to read the eBooks I download from Project Gutenberg lately.
