#today I got my garden cart back from the neighbors so I was able to move all of my mature compost and use it to mulch around my tomato plants. This used up all the compost that I currently have, so the remaining area will be mulched with a mixture of leaf mold and grass clippings over the course of the season as they become available. While I was doing that, #BeetBear spent some time with his beet crop, cultivating and weeding. 😀

It's pouring down today. I hope the #slugs won't completely devour my #pumpkin plants. They're even eating my #onions and #garlics 😠 🤮 + the #ants are killing off my #cucumber plants. Sometimes #gardening can be frustrating. Heute regnet es Bindfäden. Hoffe, die #Nackschnecken werden nicht alle meine Kürbispflanzen auffressen. Sie haben sich schon über #Zwiebeln + #Knoblauch hergemacht. #Ameisen killen meine #Gurken. Manchmal ist #gärtnern furstrierend. #gardening

@Christine_Broesenhuber I know it! Two of my squashes have been munched overnight... little feckers! I use wool pellets where I expect trouble and they seem to be effective

@gardening @Christine_Broesenhuber I know! One of the real issues for me is that the environments they like to live in - well vegetated, scruffy area - are really important environmentally. I’m naturally untidy so that’s easy for me but temptations to just get in there and clear overgrown areas is strong when I know what’s hiding in there

I’ve just turned over a compost heap and then planted out an overgrown cork oak. I bought it as a novelty about 4 inches high. It’s been 6 ft and pot bound for a couple of years, and while I definitely do not want a full size cork oak in my garden, pruning is my friend. The hole for the oak was under two old stumps. Took off the first one and my mollusc problem was exposed! Took a bucket of them to the nearby field…

@PostcardsFromParadise If I touch them, a fine white powder clouds off them... I've seen it previously and it comes when the brocolli is pretty much done anyway so not the end of the world in a sense. But I don't want to be building up a bad fungus by being slow to deal, if I ought to...

Some of my beloved chillie plants are getting strange leaves. The leaves look a bit crippled (sorry for the word).

Do you have any idea why this is happening and how to fix it?
I've already checked for pests such as small flies but couldn't find any.

My experience of these things and the answers, if it isn't a bug, is that it will be as a result of one of 4 things:

  1. Too much water;
  2. Too little water;
  3. Too many nutrients;
  4. Too few nutrients.

I find these issues deeply annoying! Had something similar last year which I think had to be as a result of something in some manure I'd got - but I could never work it out. Hope someone has some ideas.

@Skepticat My missus and son stayed with gay mates in NY a few years back. They'd named their wifi 'we can hear you having sex'. A neighbour apparently changed theirs to 'we can hear you having sex too and youre doing it wrong'

Experimenting with propagating rosemary cuttings. 10 were kept in water for 2 weeks until they started to grow roots. 10 were cut and directly potted. Both received rooting powder.

@fatpeppers Interesting! The key difference I've found with rosemary cuttings is whether I put a bag around the pot or not. With a bag, I get close to 100% success. Without it's about 10%.

I don't use rooting powder - but interested to hear how that goes.

Reducing poverty really does seem absent from the #Labour party's plans. If there is anyway to know what those plans actually constitute over and above 'get elected'?

But all the clear signals tell us is that #KeirStarmer believes in trickle-down, is anti-union, and his party is utterly corrupt and can be (cheaply) bought - see the Wes Streeting NHS is for sale debacle which would have shamed #Thatcher.

It's at complete odds with the DNA of the party. Weird. I mean basically they really are now just #Tory, Mark II.

I am bitter at folks who self-indulged in the anti-Corbyn rhetoric. He was almost none of the serious things he was accused of - and the worst accusations to really land are he's not a great speaker, he's a technocrat, and wasn't clear about his Brexit position (it was spectacularly misrepresented). That's looking like costly self indulgence right now.

Privatisation of the NHS, extreme trickledown devotion, union-busting, Murdoch promotion, promotion of the American hard right, Iraq war - creating the vacuum for ISIS +C1m dead, the Balkans war which was Putin’s big trigger, destruction of HMRC technical teams while filling London with the wurst people and money in the planet and of course, fucking the Palestinians. I was posted to Belgrade just after we’d bombed it on totally spurious grounds - remember Jamie O’Shea telling outright lies on BBC news night after night as #NATO spokesman? The Russians had a proper wtf moment there and did not forget it. We ignored them and their long history with Serbia to pursue our dishonest bombing campaign. Noam Chomsky’s The New Military Humanism sets it out clearly. That was the moment.
