Shopping for memory foam mattress toppers is an exercise in sorting through dozens of products that appear to be almost exactly the same, and each one has reviews saying it's way too hard and uncomfortable right alongside reviews saying it's way too soft and you sink into it too much.

Doxin,
@Doxin@rubber.social avatar

@MLE_online Memory foam changes firmness pretty wildly based on ambient temperature. Both reviews could be correct depending on what they set their thermostat to.

As soon as you lie on it it'll soften up due to body heat in any case.

@smellsofbikes @MLE_online I mean there's the whole preference thing too of course

There is a well-established tradition of making and iterating upon designs of 3D printers, but...Has anybody thought "I am going to make a 2D printer"? This feels like a gap. Sometimes, I just want to compose a letter to my grandmother or do little a mail merge, as a treat. Expandability would be great; Centronics, RS-232 and RS-485 interfaces would be fantastic, with maybe an embedded PostScript.

Am I insane?

@xan AFAIK the main issue is that the print heads are very hard to DIY.

Yeah you could build all the other bits and then use a proprietary print head but what's the point of that?

Several people now have tagged me in the Mini arrow-lookin'-tail light thing.

You're correct that it bothers me but you're incorrect if you think the arrow part has much to do with it.

It's bothersome to me only because it's a combined brake and turn indicator!

I am surprised at folks who think the resemblance to an arrow pointing the wrong way is actually confusing: I find it extremely unlikely that people even parse the presence of the arrow over which side of the vehicle is flashing.

Doxin,
@Doxin@rubber.social avatar

@TechConnectify I think the point is that in the dark you can't really see which side of the car the blinker is on if the other side is obscured.

I still don't think the arrow pointing the wrong way is a big deal. If a situation is unclear you're supposed to slow down in any case.

It is a mighty silly design decision though.

@TechConnectify I fully agree it's not a real issue. I do see the argument though.

If given the choice between having a directionally neutral indicator or a directional indicator which points the wrong way, I'd go for the neutral one every single time. Just in case it matters in 0.1% of cases.

There's a lot of these cars on the road. Very very small probabilities still happen a lot when big numbers like these get involved.

@TechConnectify All I'm saying is the holes in the Swiss cheese line up like that all the time, just by dint of there being a lot of people.

And yes amber blinkers make WAY more sense ;P

bad idea: A mouse cursor that's not just a simple floating pointer, it's a cat/dog paw... but it stretches all the way to an edge of the screen like it's a really long leg

@foone I've been working on a little GUI framework for the playdate, and this cursor idea fits much too well with the whimsy of the playdate.

For what it's worth: if you're a person who struggles with cooking, I recommend a few specific recipes:

  • Chili: This is just canned tomatoes, canned beans, any spices you like, and any meat. You can brown the meat or not. (which means "heating up a pot, pouring in about a large spoonful of oil, putting the meat in, and stirring occasionally") Cook on low heat for an hour or so and you're good!

  • Soup: It's the same as chili, but you use water, potatoes, and possibly Better than Bouillon instead of tomatoes and canned beans.

  • Spaghetti: It's the same as chili, except you use canned tomato sauce and tomatoes. Making noodles in a separate pot just requires following the instructions on the box.

  • Roast: Actually, there are a few ways to do this one, depending on whether you want to use an oven or a pot, and depending on whether you have a meat thermometer. Most roast recipes are really easy!

These are all meals that make large portions and can be done in one pot, so the cleanup is easy. They involve very little prep.

The effect of cooking more is that you are not supporting the gig economy and you are probably eating a larger amount of more nutritious food.

Oh, and be sure to salt generously!

@pyrex Another good one is buddha bowl. Prepare some rice according to the instructions on the box. Let cool. Add sesame dressing. Add vegetables cut into chunks. Add Tofu or meat chunks. Add avocado slices. Add whatever toppings sound like they might work.

The sesame dressing is like magic. It elevates this dish from alright to stunning.

Try varying with how you cut the vegetables. Grated carrot is a different experience from carrot slices for example.

Great for getting rid of leftovers.
