I know everyone likes to dump on rural people as though we're a monolith and are all MAGA and stupid, but we're not. Come to a rural area sometime and see what you find. In my community up north, we have a co-op grocery store. Has been around forever providing groceries, hardware, and feed for animals. In my community in northern Michigan we're fighting real estate investors (from your "big" cities) who want to build Higgins Lake up into the next resort town. 1/

CindySue,
@CindySue@bookstodon.com avatar

They have completely infiltrated our township politics to the point that one township is actually planning on building a high rise fire department with a high rise fire truck. What the fuck high rises do we have... unless you already know the plans for the area.
All this said, we're someone, too. We're fighting battles, building community, and are left off the minds of anyone who could actually help us out. We have needs and our sense of community is what gets those met. 2/

Because no one else is even paying attention to rural areas. Other than to use our back yards as play grounds for the rich. If you feel rural voters are the problem, but no Democrat is even willing to step up in a rural community to see what people need or to step in when the corruption is as bad as it is in Higgins Lake, I've got news for you. People have been left behind and there are good people doing good things here. Like I said, we're not a monolith. 3/3

Parents of Mastodon: give me advice about flying with a little kid. We're flying from Sacramento to San Diego, so it's a short flight. Should we buy The Boy his own seat?

CindySue,
@CindySue@bookstodon.com avatar

@NickGates How little are we talking? Always buy a seat. Even if they sit with you, you will want the extra room it provides. Flying with my son when he was an infant was a breeze. I just breast fed the whole time. Toddlers need to be busy. Give them something to do. Coloring book, a video to watch, books... Anything that will keep them busy. Older kids generally are fine. My kids always had a Kindle or something to read or play games on.

Thank you, Fedi-Family, for all the well wishes!

Bad news - I've tested positive for tuberculosis

Good news - it's latent TB, and my chest x-ray suggests the disease is not active

Good news 2 - I'll be starting a 6 month regiment of medicines to kill the disease (and they are covered by my insurance)

Bad news 2 - there's a risk my case could turn active at any time, so I'm broken hearted to be taking medical leave from work, and won't be returning to finish the school year with my class

Oddly enough, I "feel" fine. Had my annual blood work not tested for it, I wouldn't have even known

Other than the pesky sinus issues, I have no symptoms at all

It should be an interesting next six months

Marker from my blood work results: QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus Current Result: Positive Flag: Abnormal Reference Int: Negative

Well, we didn't get much snow last night, just some slush. Hoping it stays that way. It looks like the rain is supposed to turn to a mix later and tomorrow.

What has Biden done for workers?

"Well he seems about to mandate a safety lock on table saws..."

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad for this and I'm sure Trump would do the opposite and worse. But... like... can you not see how far away from enough this is? And it's been like this with every vaguely positive thing the Biden admin has done. Cool, but I'm not getting excited, and you really can't blame me for not getting excited.

@SallyStrange Yup, people seem to be under the impression that we can't call out Biden (or in Michigan, Whitmer) for the stuff they haven't done or have done poorly. Small steps are good, but we need more in order to move forward and it seems that it isn't the Biden administration's game plan.

Tell me a silly/funny childhood story!

I'll start:

One time in Sunday School, the teacher was talking about the difference between humans and animals, and mentioned that Animals had Tails and humans didn't. I let her know this was not true, because my Dad had a tail, just in the front, instead of the back. The teacher was silent for several seconds, and tried to correct me in a church appropriate way, but I doubled down, and insisted that my little brothers also had front tails too. This got so heated that the teacher had to go get my parents to take me out of Sunday School.

CindySue,
@CindySue@bookstodon.com avatar

@RickiTarr My brothers and I used to set booby traps in the trails near our house and then try to ride our bikes through them. One time the rope crossed the trail right at my neck level (oops) and I ran into it on my bike. I wasn't seriously hurt, but I had a rope burn around my throat for the next few weeks. My parents must have been so mortified to go into public with me.

We are getting a snow storm tonight. I have heard everything from 6 inches to over a foot and a half of snow. I am not thrilled about this as it means I am stuck at the cabin for a day until it gets all cleared out. Honestly, even 6 inches is more than we have gotten in one go all winter downstate. Maybe we should have stayed at home, I am not prepared for a bunch of snow here.

In Michigan, Governor Whitmer has made a lot of progress on a number of issues. One issue she is FAILING us on is mining in the Upper Peninsula. She has okayed funding for a Canadian company to come into the UP, specifically the Porcupine Mountain region, and do incredibly harmful strip mining. She needs to be called out for this. The U.P. has some of the only pristine wilderness left in Michigan and it will be ruined by this mining.

My uncle called this morning to let us know we can go down to the family condo any time we want. I am thinking it might be a good, distraction free place to get some major work done. No kids, no animals. Just the husband and I working on our stuff. Maybe this summer we can plan a week long trip.

Hold On Tight by Abbi Glines | Book Review

I definitely read the entire thing in a southern accent! Something I really enjoy is seeing authors compare different types of love in their books; love that isn't really sincere or healthy vs. love that's more genuine and true, and this book does that. Though, I will say this book won't be everyone's cup of tea...
