Yesterday was my first play of the For The People in absolute yonks. Since before I have regularly been tracking my plays of back in 2007.

The action took place mostly in the east. The central and western theaters soon became a deadlock. Lee getting killed, as a subordinate general, and Grant taking over the Army of the Potomac really opened up the game in the east.
Good game with clever moves and mistakes on both sides.

Game was recently republished by

I've been getting slightly obsessed with trick takers. In the last few weeks I've played:

Boast or Nothing
Cauldron 15
Chimera
Dealt
Extreme Tricks
Nokosu Dice
Potato Man
Rage
Seas of Strife
Smart Ass
Stick Em
Voodoo Prince

Luckily the club is open to playing them. They enjoy the interactivity and familiar rules.

Have you tried The Crew? It’s a multiplayer player co-op trick taking game.

The original “The Crew” is a great building & learning experience with the 50 mission progression. Mission Deep Sea has more replayability in the long run and is perfect as a flexible difficulty filler game.

London (second edition) #boardgame designed by #MartinWallace
That's the one with poverty cubes. It's always a nice brain burning balance.
We ended with the simple dice rolling fun of Can't Stop.

5-player The Quacks of Quedlinburg #boardgame with the herb Witches expansion. We had an interesting mix of effects too. It was fun trying to get synergies with the tile effects.

Next were two game of Ivanhoe by #ReinerKnizia and #GMTGames
It's a great card game with bluffing, deception, and hand management.

Meanwhile the other tables played Heat, Lords of Vegas, Bora Bora and Illimat, and The Fox Experiment.

Do I really need another version of the Love Letter #boardgame ?
Definitely. And I have not even watched the #Bridgerton TV series.

Yesterday at Odyssey Games Pasadena was three of us among a sea of minis games, card gamers, and a big group of board gamers later. So we were very civil with two 3-player games on civil-wars.

First was Brotherhood and Unity on early-1990s Bosnia and Herzegovina. That was followed by the semi-uncooperative Land and Freedom on the Spanish Civil War.

I'm not a fan of IP-based board games. With the best board games you can tell that they were a labour of love, with most IP-based ones you can tell that it was someone's job to borrow some ideas and stuff them into an IP-world. Or they're simple re-skins of existing games. I'll count Arkham Horror LCG as a border-case and/or notable exception. I backed The Last of Us: Escape the dark, but mostly because the other Escape the xyz games are so excellent. And I guess I backed STALKER.

There are a few good/great examples of use of ip in #boardgames.
Battlestar Galactica by FFG still stands out. Sons of Anarchy by GF9 was good. The Firefly games was good but took way to long to play.

TIL some people who sleeve their cards, actually sleeve their cards, and than put the sleeved cards in sleeves!

I was looking at sleeves because we have a game that has 5 cards that are heavily handled, and I realised I really don’t like sleeves 😉 I guess we want the very tight fitting “inner" sleeves for these cards, we don't care if dirt can get in on the top, just that the cards don't fall apart after 450 plays 😛

In my experience lamination is a very bad idea for cards. Eventually the laminated edges break due to impact from shuffling. Then the card is trash. Lamination is for playaids and dry erase boards.

For cards with lots of shuffling the best option is to use good quality sleeves and to include spare sleeves in the game box as sleeves will eventually split.

Having a discussion with a small #boardgame designer/publisher about posting the games rules online for prospective buyers to peruse before the game is released. We get a firm refusal to post a rules PDF saying he must be a "poor businessman".

I am hesitant to purchase #boardgames without gathering info on the game. That includes looking over the rules, or other game documentation, images etc

Note: I do not expect all of the game contents to be made available. But I like to see the rules.

Monday night #VCSBG #boardgames and #craftbeer in #Moorpark

We played the Cleopatra and the Society of Architects #boardgame with Dan’s house rules. You roll the ankh dice every time someone builds. More corruption shenanigans is good, right? I agree. A simple but fun change. Eric and myself both ended on the same and the most corruption. Dan won!

Next was my 1st play of Coimbra. Wow, so much going on. Almost overwhelming trying to decipher all the card effects. I came last by a good margin.

How often does this happen to you ? You have carefully listened to the rules explanation. You understand how the individual game mechanics work. But when the cube hits the game board you have no idea how it’s all supposed to work!

Another play for Moa designed by #MartinWallace. This time it took half the time to play. Once again I came second.

Next up was Istanbul. A game I have no recollection of playing before. But I have. Cheers to #BGG for having a better memory that I have.

Last game for the night was Savannah Park. It's a light tile movement/placement #boardgame that is simple but challenging. And I don't just mean finding the specific tiles on the your board.

#boardgames yesterday with the SoCalWargamers at Games At My Place in Pasadena
First up was Nappy Wars by #GMTGames
The Coalition seemed to have held France back. Bob played his final card and it was Extended Campaign. Boom. Davout stormed into central Austria brushing all resistance aside. Would Austria fall to this devastating onslaught? Bob made the Conquest die-roll. The game had changed. Then he did again when Bob rolled a natural 6 for the Peace die-roll. Wtf! Well played Bob.

Time to break lunch aka burger and a beer. I had a nice Red Ale, a Smog City Sabre-Toothed Squirrel.

Next up was the Nations #boardgame . This is a fave of Terry and he kindly taught it. Yeesh. It was brutal yet fun. Wow, if you fall behind it is tough. It also depends on how cruel your fellow players choose to be.

Possibly controversial opinion/s on what should, and more importantly should NOT occur at the table.

These for group settings with multiple games also in progress:

  1. Game music or soundtrack. I'm looking at you Space Alert!

  2. All the players watching a video or using an app to learn the game for the first time*.
    *Unless the game is ridiculously simple and quick to learn. But you would only know that when someone watches the rules explanation beforehand!

Change My Mind

@gpage

We were discussing the subject of "calling a game" and how often it occurs in euro #boardgames compared to war games.

Imho, it rarely occurs in euro games. We have quit a game due to major rules muck-ups or just not enjoying the game, but games usually get played to completion.

Wargames more often get "called" early. We pack up and move on. Perhaps it's because there are often 2-player games or win/lose win conditions?

BoardGameBloke,
@BoardGameBloke@tabletop.vip avatar

@RogerBW @gpage

I'm thinking that more euro games are point salad affairs were the winner is less obvious due to the scoring scheme.

One of my fave yet under used mechanics in #boardgames is double-blind. Each player has an identical map where the only their units and the front line is marked. Units tend to blunder into each other when players call out the enemy controlled hex they are moving into. 8th Army: Operation Crusader is the best of the 3 put out by GDW in the early 80s.

The game came out way back in 1984. How many board gamers are younger than this #boardgame ? On second thoughts don’t answer that!

@RogerBW

I feel the hex callout is part of the fog of war / deception of the game. That cloud of sand on the horizon? Is it the bulk of the Desert Rats or a lone recon unit?

With a referee is the best option but it works great for two-player. Especially so for the swirling mess that was Operation Crusader.

The Heat: Pedal to the Metal #boardgame has been a group regular over the last few months. As a card based racing game it works very well. The “heat” mechanic adds both choice & risk. I have still not managed to get the timing right. But it was close.
Paul described QE as “High Society 2.0”. QE is an auction game with a twist. Only the winner and the auction leader know the winning bid. Whomever bid the most in the game cannot win.
