"Wayland and X.org are both part of freedesktop. Whatever maintenance is still happening on X.org is mostly being done by people who primarily work on Wayland. There isn't some kind of holy war going on between The Wayland Developers who want to kill X.org, and The X.org Developers who believe it is great and want to keep it. They're nearly all the same people, and they all want X.org to die."

— Adam Williamson https://lwn.net/Articles/960634/

Anarcat,

@uecker @tyil i don't understand those responses. you are responding to a Xorg developer saying "i am not doing this anymore". all the Xorg people that are left are doing Xwayland. no one is working on Xorg as its own thing. so unless you yourself have a desire to work on a 40-year old windowing system, i suggest you listen to the people that do work on it.

Anarcat,

@uecker @tyil i did read your reply. i disagree with you, that's all: i don't think people stopped contributing because they were "discouraged" by wayland, they just started contributing to wayland.

Anarcat,

@uecker @tyil i think what i found frustrating with your reply is that you're taking the original post which says "there is no conspiracy to get rid of Xorg" and say "there is a conspiracy to get rid of Xorg"... if you disagree with the fundamental premise of the post from a Xorg maintainer, i don't see why you think commenting here, in this way, will change anything

"shipping label created" is a code word for "mañana"

Anarcat,

@rbo_ne sometimes i doubt it is even printed, i think it's the equivalent of a ICMP REPLY packet :p

Fascinating results. Elevated Systems found that YouTube streaming battery life on Ubuntu is actually better than on Windows!

Anarcat,

@frameworkcomputer one thing i notice is suspend is worse than windows though, which i do not find surprising. ;)

that moment when you compare two git repos on github and one has already rendered the "Contributors" tab (and it's a single one) and the other one still says "Crunching the latest data"... maybe you go with the latter?

Anarcat,

also what the heck happens when they "crunch the latest data" exactly? they generate some blobs and store it in a cache? they hire some mechanical turk to draw pretty graphs? they shove coal in the DC generator?

Anarcat,

loving that style

Framework Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen 7040 Series) is now
rtings.com top-scoring Windows (or Linux) Business Laptop: https://www.rtings.com/laptop/reviews/framework/laptop-13-2023

Anarcat,

@frameworkcomputer as they say in that article, it would be pretty amazing to have an OLED display on the Framework, is that planned? how about a touch/stylus screen?

Framework's efforts to compete with Apple hardware extend to their power cables, which shed their jacket after a year or so. At least it's a standard USB-C cable and inexpensive to replace.

I like to think of it as molting.

Anarcat,

@jbcrawford i haven't had that problem with mine, but i haven't used their power adapter mobile a lot, i've mostly gone for third-party ones and kept theirs for the desktop...

Anarcat,

@cks no way, you're with eicat! how is it going? also: the gap in logs is because syslog started writing to the logs again and the clock was all messed up

Anarcat,

@grifferz fascinating: I setup APUs as VPNs for work, and I got quite upset when they basically shutdown the week after I ordered from them... i wish there was something similar now, the closest I found was Protectli and qotom but they're pricier

any advice on a residential / business #isp with static IP and all ports open for a server in #canada #quebec #montreal? my current provider (oricom) wants me to get a NEQ to get a business package (ugh)

GPT-4 just hallucinated the daddr @eth0 syntax instead of (say) daddr 10.0.0.1. it doesn't exist, naturally, but i think it's a great idea.

Do you know about the #search engine for my #blog https://search.kushaldas.in/ ? #python #rust

Anarcat,

@kushal i do not, but i'd love to hear about how it works! :)

gosh i wish #gitlab would stop turning every dollar sign pair into a LaTeX formula. i basically never need that "feature"

hey @mozilla, there's many issues with the .deb install instructions from https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux#w_install-firefox-deb-package-for-debian-based-distributions - where do i report this?

Anarcat,

@mozilla 3. you're installing wget after using it

Anarcat,

@mozilla 4. that multi-line echo is strange too, cat <<EOF is more idiomatic, i would also make the preferences addition optional

Anarcat, (edited )

@mozilla more generally, it would have been nice to talk with, you know, Debian people if you wanted to host a Debian repository... maybe even, I dunno, talk with the actual Debian maintainers who have been packaging your software forever to see if you could collaborate? update: they did, sorry mozilla, good job! :)

Anarcat,

@adamhotep @mozilla are you sure about that? i think the ESR package in Debian is named firefox-esr, not firefox, which tries its best to be the upstream latest...

Anarcat,

@plwt @mozilla thanks for the feedback and the prompt response! i would also suggest getting rid of the gpg --import part, gpg --show-keys is much more appropriate to verify an external key
