Spotify officially cancelled.

So that's 10/month saved.
I saved $99 a year by cancelling pcloud.

I still have to have Google Drive, at least for now. But I'm going to look into how to change that.

The next task will be to start winnowing down the streaming services where I can.

@thelinuxcast Amazon sells single file mp3's you can download. THough I personally still prefer to buy the CD like a crotchety old bastard.

I'm trying to decide whether or not to stick with my current rsync based backup strategy now that I have a home lab or if I should use something like borg.

On one hand I know how to use rsync locally. On the other, I could do both my remote and my local backup with borg and just use one tool.

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast rsync user@path.to.remote:/path/from/root/to/location/on/host/

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast ah. I only use borg to handle my offsite snapshots.
For desktop to homelab I make use of rsync and let the server use btrfs snapshots.

@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast thankfully Vorta can do that!

I think the lack of a good screenshot utility is what's going to get me to leave behind. The default one is not great, and none of the others that work on Wayland work for me on Gnome. Get the same errors with grim/slurp and flameshot.

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast whats wrong with the gnome screenshot tool?

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast What do you need a more feature wise?

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast flameshot doesn't support mutter.

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast but really what about foameshot specifically do you need?

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast so you want your screen shot tool to be able to edit the image as well?

Tonight's video is going to be pushed back to tomorrow.

Mobian is probably not going to happen. The PinePhone is just a POS, tbh.

Planned on a neofetch video, but no need to do that as it has been well covered today already.

Going through a period lately where it's just hard to come up with topics.

The Immich news today I hope is the start of a trend. Vitally important projects that will help us be freed from the clutches of the big few tech companies nurtured and protected.
I do hope the FUTO turn out to be the good guys their site appears to make them out to be. Time will be the judge. But it's a very promising thing. Congrats to the #immich project.

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@ironicbadger Welp guess I wont use it now because FUTO doesn't understand what Open Source is

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@teleclimber @ironicbadger look up GrayJay

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@ironicbadger My issue is that they don't allow distribution. So even if I get GreyJay I can only get it from them directly legally. Which means I cannot just pass the apk package around via sneakernet which is still a very common practice in my area.

Okay, going to try an rsync backup with no RAID this time. Maybe proxmox doesn't like RAID in a VM?

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast if your not passing the Disk through then you should not be using RAID of a software volume.

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast ok and what is the guest operating system?

Seeing how COSMIC can look with a bit of visual tweaking gives me a lot more hope, whilst I like the core functionality that had previously been shown, the styling wasn't too my liking but I'm really impressed with what I've seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHLfsWhDvz0

@BrodieOnLinux there's actually a ublue project that has COSMIC

People who are obsessed with taking notes spend more time looking for a note-taking solution (or creating one) than actually taking notes.

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast Are you sure about that? I know someone who's taken to just using MS notepad and basic text files.

Maybe I'm too corpratist, but why do companies like Epic think they can force Apple and Google to allow Epic Games into their app stores for free? I get it that 30% is outrageous. It is. But Epic seems to want to be in the stores for free, without having to ever pay any fees to be there.

It just doesn't make sense to me.

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast 30% cut is actually pretty standard. Whats not standard is that it's not a flat 30% for everyone and Apple and Google both have been caught charging either 0% or even 5% for some paid apps.

So in the last few hours I've learned pretty much that I'm too dumb for docker.

Also learned that there are a ton of old ass tuts out there that don't work. And that led to learning how to reset docker containers, which is still something I apparently can't do.

Shoulda used the snap.

10leej,

Setting up software RAID on my new home lab. I'm not doing anything fancy nor am I doing any redundancy, though I know I should. When I get more drives into my 8 bay drive enclosure, I will probably go to a higher RAID level.

The process was surprisingly easy, though formatting the array is taking a bit of time, unsurprisingly.

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast It's already formatted it just needs to sync if your using mdadm

yay, my iPod mini has a new battery and is back in service!

There must be a reason Amazon uses a ridiculously-big box to ship a tiny battery

10leej,
@10leej@fosstodon.org avatar

@yakkoj because a smaller battery would necetate a smaller box which was either out of stock or not available at the packaging station at the distribution center
