It will take time to spin up production of the 1:3 scale VT100 terminals so for pre-sale buyers I'm making a "thank you for your patience" 1:10 scale mini. Here is a quick test print and oh, wow is it a cutie pie.
😻
The display cutout has an indent sized for cardstock so it can show whatever screenshot or image they care to print.

A potential display panel and driver for the 1:3 scale VT100 terminals arrived. The next step is to make a bezel for it to see how it sits in the case. If it works as advertised then it has 640x480 pixels driven over HDMI.

Ok retrocomputing folks, the "Help Make the VT100" pre-sale is live!
🎉
To thank supporters for helping fund tooling and time for production I've set this at a lower price and have included a bonus cutie VT100 mini made only for this sale.
💻
If a 1:3 scale working VT100 sounds like something you'd like then head over to the store:

Y'all.
I checked the store sales page and now I'm a bit sniffly because more people than I expected decided to help produce the smol VT100s by pitching in on today's pre-sale. I see a lot of familiar names of people who have encouraged me to keep going with messages here and emails with their fond memories of retrocomputers triggered by seeing a miniature on their desk every day.
😭
Thank you. Thank you.

@trevorflowers Here, enjoy a 1:3 scale VT100 User Guide.

Heads-up, smol people.
🖥️
To make working 1:3 scale keyboards I need time and tools that require more money than I have on hand (tough Winter) so let's try something new!
⌨️
On 04/04 on https://store.transmutable.com I'll list a "help make the VT100 pre-sale" for 1:3 scale signed & numbered VT100 terminals.
⚙️
To thank buyers for their support and patience while I finish development they'll quickly receive a wee VT100 mini made only for this pre-sale.
😻
(edit: changed to 1:3)

@phranck Over the past year I've tried several price points and complexity levels. I sell many more smol floppy organizers than Connection Machines but they bring in around the same amount of revenue. I can't remember what scale your NeXT workstation is. Is it 1:3?

phranck,
@phranck@chaos.social avatar

@trevorflowers It's 1:2.

This is what I have often heard from app developers. After they raised their prices significantly in some cases, not only did the potential target group change, there were also (of course) fewer sales, but more revenue overall.

So, I'm designing a system to produce 1:4 scale keyboards that are as close as possible to the look, feel, and sound of the full scale originals. The first version will be used in miniature VT100 terminals and I hope to reuse much of the work for other designs and scales.
This is the head of a threadlog about my process, goals, mistakes, and progress.

I like to leave test prints around the house so that I catch them out of the corner of my eye which lets me see them with a less familiar vision. Making a thing in CAD tends to distort what I can see of it.

@trevorflowers In CAD, 1000 feet may as well be 0.01mm. It’s easy to lose a sense of scale when modeling sometimes. For a lot of my work, I insert a 6ft tall human model into my layouts to see how crazy (or not) something is.

@blakespot via a terminal, or is this a dedicated irc app?

blakespot,

@colin_mcmillen It's "logged in" to the Mac Studio, and is serving as a terminal to it, running the terminal-based irssi client on the Mac.

The whole thing is detailed here,
