Basically, I understand the concepts of functional programming quite well and can also programme or relatively confidently. But when it comes to programming, I haven't quite got over this threshold yet. I would really like to understand everything better and learn more in this area, because many cool libraries are based on it.

Recordings for the talks at this year's Northeast Scala Symposium ( Summit and ) can be found in the conference YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLChmXNrJM1kZNLnl2bd4m6ynO5_jOTA4A

Please note that these are mostly raw and unedited, so they include the chrome from the SpatialChat window, intros, outros, and occasionally technical glitches. But they're a faithful representation of what it was like to be there -- enjoy!

http4s-netty 0.5.11 released.

https://github.com/http4s/http4s-netty/releases/tag/v0.5.11

Dependency upgrades.

Tickets are open for the Northeast Scala Symposium! As always, we're just trying to cover costs, and since we're online this year, that's only $10 for three days:

We're ironing out the details of the schedule now, and it's looking to be a great lineup of presentations, panels, and hanging out with the rest of the Scala community.

So get your ticket at https://nescalas.github.io/ and join us on October 26-28!

I had a lot of fun preparing presentation about for our local meetup. It turned out you could do a lot with stack! fs2-io and cats-effect provide solid foundation for IO and networking apps. Http server/client is covered by http4s. I hope we will see production deployments soon.

I still can't wrap my head around the chess server being built in Scala 3 and using Typelevel libraries, in an style. This chess server is insanely popular.

NE #Scala wants you!

We have a bunch of great talks lined up for the #Typelevel Summit and NE Scala, but we need more of them to fill out the schedule.

So please: think about what you and your communities have been doing that might be interesting, and consider proposing a talk.

Talks don't have to be long, and don't have to be super-technical - we're interested in everything from the community to case studies to neat libraries.

Spread the word!

Yesterday at $work we upgraded a #Typelevel #scala stack service that powers our help center search and other internal tools from 2.13 to 3.3 and it was boring and easy.

I went through a rabbithole and added giter8 support to scala-cli, just so I can have easier scaffolding of #typelevel scripts.

Try it out! https://github.com/typelevel/toolkit.g8 (note: you need scala-cli 1.0.2+)

The combination of version 3 and and is pretty neat. "Kittens" is a library that has derived type classes for Cats. I just learned about Kittens yesterday. "Kittens" uses libraries underneath.

Welcome to the home of the NE Scala conference!

This annual gathering is three one-day conferences, back to back:

  • The #Typelevel Summit, curated by the TL community
  • NE #Scala proper, voted on by attendees
  • The Unconference, a free-form day of whatever folks want to talk about

The conference traditionally rotates between Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City, in the northeastern US.

Watch this space for news and announcements!

Hi! I'm a lifelong programmer with a passion for #Scala and good engineering, which has led me in the direction of #FP. As of relatively recently, I'm on the #Typelevel Steering Committee.

I also do #SCA, #LARP, #fandom, #comics, and lots of other geekeries. I live in greater #Boston.

I'm all over the Web, usually as @jducoeur; feel free to connect to me elsenet.
