Trying something fancy from the canteen today which cost a whooping 18 ringgit (my usual is around ~10). The potato thingy is really nice #MakanApaToday
Typical Malaysian Chinese style eating out. For many Chinese ppl especially the older ones, any meal that doesn’t consist of rice plus a few dishes isn’t really a “proper” meal
Mala xiang guo (spicy stir-fry hot pot), a dish from the Tujia minority in China that has become popular among Chinese communities worldwide. Since customers can choose what ingredients go into the pot, Malaysian chains often have “localized” ingredients such as yong tau foo that are not typically found in the original version. The chain I usually go to also have a halal chain for Muslim customers (Mala Mala).
& all of sudden I craved for “cucur badak” for tea time.
This bite sized savoury treat made from sweet potato mixed with flour, & for the filling we have chilli shredded coconut flesh. It then deep fried to perfection & served hot.
Imagine having this with hot rose tea (or iced in this weather!) while watching people go about their businesses…
Have you ever come across this type of rice before? This is called “nasi tumpang”. The rice is “ketupat”-like texture which is mushy but dense, & layered with side dish like fish serunding, omelette, chicken or fish curry & in this photo, some shrimp. It’s packed in banana leaf in cone shape, often consumed in the morning during break by farmers, after doing some work to regain some energy.
Today I want to (re)introduce you to “budu”.
This is another #Kelantanese food in form of dipping sauce if you may, made from anchovies. It can be loosely called “fish sauce”.
It’s usually served with a dash of lime juice & cili padi & giving it wholesome taste to the budu that already salty. Sometimes we substitute lime juice with chopped young mango or similar sour fruit/veggies. I like to add fresh durian in the mix, like in the photo. #makanapatoday#jalan2carimakan#foodcomma
Melt coconut and palm sugar. Add coconut. Make pandan coconut milk batter. Put on a Siti Nurhaliza and Jaclyn Victor playlist. Make 60 pieces of kueh ketayap / dadar. Sing Malay songs at the top of your voice.
This is the Way of Kueh (an actual cookbook you should buy)
Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng and Telur Mata for me. Laksa Telur Sarang for le significant other. I know nothing about food or ingredients, and I struggled hard writing the alt text for both of these, and now I'm sad 😬 They were very good though, and pretty cheap (RM22.30 for these + 2 Teh O Ais Kosong).
