Episode 231 of the podcast is up - @freyfogle is joined by recent Geomob Berlin speaker Carston Hernke of Honeycomb Maps to discuss the need for speed and "direct manipulation" in geospatial apps and how WebAssembly can make it possible.
@stevenfeldman and @freyfogle announce the upcoming Geomob Edinburgh (Mar. 26th - thanks to @gala for organizing), and look back on recent events in Berlin, Barcelona, and London.
2/ First speaker of the evening was Andre Schober of Blacklane discussing their project to decrease vehicle ETAs. There are many variables at play, many different signals influence the calculation, and the work is on-going.
4/ Next speaker was Miriam Gonzalez, representing the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT).
Many know HOT for work during disaster response, but in this talk Miriam covered the mapping work they do on long-term health issues. Specifically she shared examples of malaria eradication in Guatemala and FGM in Tanzania.
5/ Next up was Carston Hernke of Honeycomb Maps: http://honeycombmaps.com discussing the challenge of making geospatial apps that actually get used. Users expect/demand the responsiveness of a local app from a web service.
8/ Finally we heard from Christoph Rieke @chrieke about the pros and cons of GeoJSON and his open source tool "geojson-validator" to find errors in GeoJSON files.
During #geomobBER a few hours ago, a slide by ChRieke about GeoJSON specification (2016) included some people I know today! @hobu@sgillies, T Schaub.
It was a nice afternoon. Thanks!
