Join @stevenfeldman and @freyfogle on Episode 230 of the podcast this week as they recap last week's Geomob London event, discuss @mappery's big break in the NY Times, debate the merits of video tutorials, mull how the best speaker contest can be implemented better, and contemplate how to celebrate the upcoming #OpenStreetMap 20th birthday 🎂
Our #airbnb session at #geomobLON the other day seemed to hit a nerve...well two nerves really: the "human rights" nerve, swiftly followed by the "property rights" reflex. As Ed mentions here, casting airbnb as a villain of the housing market is missing the point as the new-enclosure precedes them, but the #technofeudalist perspective does galvanise debate.
3/ In 1066 the Normans conquered England, and then decided to take an inventory. The result was the Domesday Book, a comprehensive survey of the country, including around London.
Back in 2012 Anna Powell-Smith presented "Open Domesday" at Geomob London - a project to overlay the survey results on a modern map: https://opendomesday.org
1/ Many thanks to everyone who joined us last night for another Geomob London. Was a very fun and interesting evening - as always. Here's our summary thread for those who couldn't attend.
First up thanks to @mhaklay and the UCL Geography Dept. for again hosting us - without which Geomob would not be possible. 🙏
3/ next up, we heard from Nigel Edmead of PLACE https://thisisplace.org a non-profit helping governments around the world map their territories. A complex technical but also social / trust-building challenge.
4/ Third speaker of the evening was Wil Waters, sharing his work on developing a "Geospatial Index" - a financial index of geospatial companies (or companies heavily using geospatial). Wil's basic argument was that the rewards of amazing geospatial tech are going to companies (shareholders) and not employees. If you wish to benefit/profit from these innovations you should become a shareholder. A thought-provoking talk.
5/ The topic of our 4th talk was trying to understand the effect of Airbnb on the London housing market, specifically in the Borough of Tower Hamlets where speakers Joe Leach @joeldn, Jarmila Regulova, and Jonathan Mort work. A very complex analysis of a dynamic situation with many different factors (taxes, etc) at play, the end result of which is a very difficult housing market.
6/ Our final speaker as Robert Edwards of General System https://www.generalsystem.com discussing a project to generate massive volumes of realistic travel data for testing purposes. The work will hopefully be open-sourced soon
7/ Great talks and lots of food for thought. We then adjourned for the "second half" of Geomob at the pub for discussion over #geobeers 🍻 generously made possibly by sponsors 🙏
8/ Thank you to all who attended, especially the speakers. Our next London event will by on Wed. July 3rd at Geovation in Clerkenwell as part of London Data Week! #geomobLON
Less than a week to go until we are back at UCL for Geomob London.
See you on the evening of 🗓️ Wed. 17th April for interesting geo talks followed by discussion and networking over #geobeers
