Well there it goes, I found another tiny Doom channel on YT, and that linked me to a thing they were working on, which is the Doom Master WADazine, a free Doom themed online publication. So, here's a link to it: https://wadazine.com/ #RetroGaming#Doom#BoomerShooters#gaming
Finished playing through UAC Ultra. Good shit. Got pretty intense on combat near the end, had some cool boss fights in stage 9 but stage 10 brought the hammer down, with a long combat sequence in open hellscape with constant environmental damage and slowly ambushing you with giant hordes of monsters, while drip feeding ammo and hazmat suits, culminating in finding the BFG and letting it rip into a crowd of Hell Nobles. The triple Archvile ambush after that was barely a scare as I still had plasma cells.
Overall great experience and I might replay it with mods in the future. I think that's what I'm going to do from now on, play wads first on vanilla settings, then come back with cool mods on mapsets I already know. Beats the problem of trying to tie different gameplay altering mods to mapsets I don't know the vibes of. Worst thing would be ending up with a survival horror modset to a slaughterwad! #Doom#BoomerShooters
I'll probably still want to play Wrath, Graven, and Phantom Fury but just because I have a soft spot there. I do not recommend those specific titles generally.
Oh wow randomly found a really good article on Doom source ports, explaining what they are, citing examples, and how to use them. The only thing missing, is my favorite sourceport and launcher: Woof! and Doom Explorer. So, in the spirit of helping any one wanting to get into Doom, I'm pinning this on my profile.
Second link is the github page for Woof as my personal recommendation, but you could also use DSDA-Doom.
And third link is the download page for Doom Explorer, with the caveat that it currently does not have a Linux build and for that I use ZDL instead.
Finally getting to play what was actually the FIRST custom wad that I ever downloaded for Doom: UAC Ultra. I had never actually played more than 2 maps of this, and I felt like I should finally correct that. Made it to map 4 already and oh boy I do like this wad now. It's dark, moody visual aesthetics (created with the help of Quake textures) contrasts a tight and somewhat challenging combat gameplay in hallways with clever traps, and fantastic pumping music. #Doom#BoomerShooters
Because we are warriors that never give up: I was trying to get Odamex and Zandronum running on my Linux laptop for the past few hours, and I finally have both working.
I had to compile Odamex from source, then download the Windows build to actually get the launcher running, and link that to the executable I compiled earlier.
Zandronum had to be manually installed from adding the repo manually, which was annoyingly hard since the commands to do that on their website are outdated as fuck. The only thing is, I don't know if it's a Zandronum thing or not, but it does not run nearly as well as the latest GZDoom, and my mouse cursor is invisible in game. But it works online.
And then adding both of them to ZDL so I can launch them with custom wads. #Doom#BoomerShooters
If you fancy your "Doom console comparison video" with a seasoning of dry wit and a soothing Scottish accent, then you can't go wrong with @DavidXNewton's video! https://youtu.be/oRY421ZZyMw
Trying to make accounts on ZDoom and Doomworld forums to get into modding. Both websites have issues with me making accounts, both have hilariouly stringent password security requirements. ZDoom timed me out of trying to make an account for trying too many passwords (3) to fit their requirements, and I can't seem to get the Doomworld account confirmation email into my inbox. What a nice start :cat_laugh:
Plans for tomorrow: setting up Ultimate Doom Builder, WHacked, Slade, and potentially Trenchbroom on my Linux laptop. I do wanna get into this modding situation for real! #BoomerShooters#modding#Doom#Quake
Woke up today from tossing around in bed with two things stuck in my head: the damn Cerveza Cristal meme song, and the idea to make a Doom mod in MBF21 standard to convert the weapon sets from the Final Doomer+ mod for GZDoom. Now, I know I won't be able to convert all the special weapons and effects from that engine with these limitations, but a few of them should be easy, right? Would be a cool project to learn Doom modding. #Doom#modding#boomerShooters
New SQH video! We all know Wolfenstein 3D and Doom are classics. But you know what would make them better? If your answer was "4 color cyan/magenta CGA palette," then this video is for you! https://youtu.be/sF9SY2An5j0
By failing to compile DSDA-Doom on my Linux machine today, I may have found my new favorite Doom sourceport:
Woof! is another sourceport that implements MBF21, based on the lineage of Boom (but apparently forked off before it became PrBoom+ and later DSDA)
and it just plays so good
It might have just been how I keep DSDA to the original framerate of 35fps (because if I let it go any higher I get extreme screen warp when I turn, to the point where I start getting nauseous) but with this one I can put the framerate at wherever the fuck I want, and it runs and looks fine; I left it at 70 to be more smooth and not break the animations of the mod I was using, because yes, this is also perfectly compatible with MBF21 wads and mods! #retrogaming#boomerShooters#Doom
Brutal Doom has an update in testing phase!
I thought the dev was done, but he decided to do a big optimization update because this mod is extremely laggy in maps with a lot of enemies (and on phones, where a surprising amount of people main Doom)
Also, I just finished the wonderful RYLAYEH.wad on modded Doom 2 with GD_Echidna and that was a really really fun ride. Very interesting and complex map design, tons of enemies to mow down with my overpowered weapons and a cool final stage that brought me back to the start of the first stage!
I'll just uh, refrain from listening to Metallica again for a few weeks. I think I listened to The Call of Ktulu on loop at least 50 times already. I still love the song but uhhh... yeah. #retrogaming#BoomerShooters#Doom
Have I posted about this Doom mod before? I don't care, I'll post it anyway: GENOCIDE DEVICE ECHIDNA is a fucking cool mod. Hyperviolent 80's anime style, demon-slaying badass cyborg lady with completely overpowered weapons. Throw at your hardest maps and monster packs. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTB1ejoTroc #RetroGaming#BoomerShooters#Doom#DoomModding
Oh hey I didn't know this project was a thing. LibreQuake is to Quake like Freedoom is to Doom, a FOSS alternative to pair up with your sourceport of choice to play user created content without depending on the original game assets. https://librequake.queer.sh/ #Quake#FOSS#BoomerShooters#RetroGaming
And one last Quake thing before I go to sleep: just checked the addons menu on the Remaster, and they added a new one: QDOOM, the first episode of classic Doom on the Quake engine. Complete with your selection of Doom or Quake enemies! OR BOTH! #Quake#DOOM#BoomerShooters#RetroGaming
Hey, would you look at that, the Cacowards 2023 are now live! This is the first time I catch them right as they are released, so I'm looking forward to checking them out and seeing all the amazing content that came out this year. https://www.doomworld.com/cacowards/2023/ #Doom#BoomerShooters#Cacowards
It's #DOOM's birthday! To celebrate, I'm playing SIGIL II, John Romero's unofficial/official 6th episode the only way I know how:
-By bastardizing it with some gameplay mod like Brutal Doom.
Just kidding! I'm still playing SIGIL II on my Twitch channel, though!
#HappyBirthday#Doom! I still can't believe it's been #30Years and you're still making an impression... To celebrate, today we're going to take a look at Romero's #SIGIL and #SIGIL2 episodes, before diving into a megawad I've been wanting to try for a while and just never gave it a chance. Come stop by and celebrate one of gaming's most influential titles' birthday with us on today's #Sunday#Stream#Shenanigans for #Doomcember!
