I think I might have posted this before but, what the heck, I like this picture of a little ambush bug nuzzling a wingstem flower while waiting for an unfortunate bee or butterfly. Just sittin' and thinkin'.

The yellowjackets congregate around the edges, but the big wasps just land and float around on the surface of the water while they drink.

Which of the following do you consider to be "bugs"

"Bug" is not a scientific clade, or well-defined group. So, there are probably no wrong answers.

Check all that apply!

@futurebird
Since undergrad biology, I've tried to limit the term to hemiptera. (Ladybugs and pillbugs are grandfathered exceptions.)

Prior to that, I would have described all insects and a few land-based arthropods, as bugs.

A handsome "swift feather legged fly" (Trichopoda pennipes). See his elegant fringes?

Dipterists definitely missed a good naming opportunity here. He should have been a "Fast Feather Footed Fly."

A Violet Leafwalker (Chalcosyrphus chalybeus). These flies are wasp mimics. They even flick their wings the way mud-dauber wasps do. From some angles they are dark, Darth Vader black. From other angles they have the color of cobalt blue bottles.

It’s easy to forget all these tiny , but we should expect more of them as and fire interact to accelerate loss.

A milkweed beetle (Tetraopes tetrophthalmus) on - what else? - a milkweed plant.

The latin name comes from the fact that its compound eyes are split in two by its antennae, making it four-eyed.

These guys spend their whole lives on and in milkweed plants.

A tiny weevil pauses.

Weevils are funny. They're sometimes willing to pose, but when alarmed they roll and drop to the ground. I guess that's not a bad strategy for getting away from predators. Let gravity do all the work.

I mowed the lawn today just to keep it under control. The have a whole community of and in them but as soon as you lift the lid and expose them to bright , they scurry away looking to retain moisture and out of the sight of likely predators like birds. It’s difficult to get a good of any .

However, I did manage to capture an image of this .
