#Quebec minister of higher ed won’t yield on reforms despite financial hits to #McGill, #Concordia
“Quebec’s university policy changes are part of Déry’s effort to increase funding for French universities and reduce the number of non-French speakers in #Montreal’s post-secondary institutions.
French Language Minister Roberge has also complained too much English is being spoken on Montreal streets.”
@AnnaAnthro This whole mess is so dishonest. If the CAQ wanted to increase the funding to French-language universities, they could've easily done it. They could've even reallocated some funding away from Anglo universities without causing major trouble. Instead, they've decided to cosplay defenders of French (take that, PQ!) while not investing a single cent. It's language-baiting in the service of electioneering and the government's refusal to adequately fund public institutions.
@brian_gettler@AnnaAnthro Québec -- francophones included -- benefits from the presence of #McGill, #Concordia and #BishopsUniversity . If the government would start by acknowledging that, then we could have a productive conversation about what role they should play in #Québec society.
Looking forward to the antisemitism isn't real crowd getting together with the antisemitism is the Jews fault crowd and forming one giant dirtbag left Voltron.
"The #arson attack comes after a #Montreal#Jewish school, located in a #synagogue, was hit by #gunfire on Monday night but did not result in casualties. Only two days prior, two men opened fire on a Jewish girls’ school in North #York, a #Toronto suburb, causing no injuries but leaving bullet holes in the building. Montreal has seen three other incidents of shots fired at Jewish houses of worship since October 7.
Toronto has seen repeated acts of #vandalism and arson against its #synagogues, with a vandal smashing the Kehillat Shaarei Torah synagogue's windows for the second time in a month on May 17. The synagogue’s window had previously been smashed on April 19. Another Bayview Avenue area synagogue had signs set on #fire on April 26 and April 28."
@PatrickoftheG@stephanie@camerondotca We have been legally told no Religious displays in the classroom except… Christian symbols are Ok due to ‘their being our cultural heritage’.
Now this. Yup. Just smoke & mirrors away from collapse of health & education sector.
@AnnaAnthro@stephanie@camerondotca It was always a point of pride in my mind that we didn't go in for flags and nonsense, unlike a lot of the RoC and America. That we knew better, that we didn't need that kind of goofy outdated 17th century value.
Turns out there is a #MontrealPython informal meetup event coming up this Saturday (June 1st, 2024) on the #LachineCanal in #PointeSaintCharles (near #Griffintown) in #SoMTL … the first outdoors event as far as I know, as a family-friendly picnic/potluck, right next to the cycleway. Beautiful weather is to be expected.
I'll be there in case anyone else from the extended #Montreal#Python / #opensource programming community wants to meet to… literally touch grass 😎
Je marchais le long des rues, faisant un vaste quadrilatère quand je vis un boisé aussi feuillu que fleuri à l'angle de la rue Bélanger et de la rue Saint-Vallier!
