After seeing the evolution of Elaine and Guybrush through the ages, now it’s time for one of the most famous video game villains, and one of my favorite characters, the one and only LeChuck from the Monkey Island series!
A few days ago, Telev78 very generously shared his new scan of the official "Monkey Island 2 Hint Book" with the community. I am a huge fan of the classic LucasArts adventure, so - of course - I was excited!
It was glorious, but I felt his original upload could benefit greatly from a little bit of digital restoration. With Telev78's permission, I used macOS and Pixelmator Pro to clean and repair all of the Hint Books's 72 pages.
@konstantinosd Just read the MI1 article now. Great stuff!
Interesting that Mark Ferrari says the doors on Melee High Street were "sadly never used for a puzzle". According to the 2020 VGHF source code stream, there was such a puzzle cut from the Governor's Mansion: Guybrush had to lead some ants to an anteater through a hallway with a bunch of fake interlocking doors and one real door. #monkeyisland#lucasarts#adventuregames
@konstantinosd I'm pretty sure the basic puzzle idea for that scene was recycled for the jungle mini-maze in Tikal in Fate of Atlantis - Indy has to shepherd a jungle rodent through a series of false interlocking paths onto the one true path so it can get rid of a snake. #monkeyisland#lucasarts#indianajones#fateofatlantis#adventuregames
Earlier tonight, I was surprised to learn that the 1990 EGA version of the original "Secret of Monkey Island" needs a separate Roland-Upgrade (DISK09.LEC) to support MT-32 music. A feature, that came as standard with the VGA version. Oh, well... this should only have been a quick Google search, but unfortunately, the LucasArts FTP server closed down years ago.
Luckily, after a few hours of research, I found out the Way-Back-Machine holds a complete index of all these updates and patches from 1999 and I eventually also discovered a complete FTP site grab from 2013! I'm so glad someone made the effort to preserve these files!
I got a computer for my kids for Christmas. I've been setting it up for them, and they really like playing retro games. So, in addition to RetroArch and a bunch of old console games, I also installed @scummvm with a handful of adventure games that I've loved since I was a kid (Monkey Island, King's Quest, Maniac Mansion).
I'm looking for suggestions for other ScummVM compatible games that adventurous kids might like that may be less well known.
Any point and click adventure games you played as a kid that you could recommend?
This year has been so chaotic that I didn't get a chance to set up my desktop Christmas tree, but at least this bucket of awesome from last year continues to live rent free in my heart
