Another #Linux rant because nothing ever works and the community keeps disappointing me.
Why in the world does everyone say #KDENeon works so good it's "the most reliable KDE distro ever, been using it for 48723698 years!" when in the FIRST day everything keeps breaking? I've been losing the whole day trying to fix KDE Neon, NOTHING works! I just want to play my games... :(
Genuinely thinking to go back to Windows after 7ish years of daily driving Linux... I've been getting disappointed more and more. I hoped for Linux to improve with reliability, but it never did. It just keeps breaking.
All this "high customisability" comes at a cost, clearly.
I deeply regret buying a laptop for Linux with a hidpi screen. With two external 1080p screens, the scaling is all over the place and barely usable. Dangerously close to getting rid of the laptop and replacing it with a 1080p display one.
@popey@keyboardg last time I checked, #kubuntu had to skip plasma 6 for this cycle. I guess it is going to be eventually backported from 24.10. I think your best bet is going to be #kdeneon
Trying out KDE 6 in the latest #KDENeon beta, and right out of the box I am VERY impressed with just how refined and polished it feels, and I really appreciate the subtle softening of the interface.
I’ve always found #KDE to be a bit too squared off and stiff for my liking, but this new look is something I think that I could easily get used to, especially since #GNOME seems downright obsessed with large rounded corners lately. Really good stuff here.
#foss people out there, what #linux distro do you use and why? Please note, this is not a distro bashing conversation. Rather, it's curiosity about other opinions and learning.
I've used #ubuntu#kubuntu or #kdeneon as daily driver for the past 14 years. Whilst I like neon, it doesn't play very nicely with Nvidia. Yes, I'm fully aware you can get it to work, but it's a pain in the ass and regularly breaks shortly after getting things somewhat working. At least that's my experience.
About ten years ago, I had a brief flirtation with #opensuse and the relationship ended badly. I still have a little trauma from that. I'm pretty sure it was all my fault, but never could figure out what I did wrong.
I've been very unimpressed with the direction that Canonical is taking and wanted to try something new. I tried an Arch based distro last autumn and really found the community too caustic to new people joining. Not to mention, I saw a lot fascist views inserted into comments and replies to other users. That was dropped quickly.
After New Year's, I decided to get crazy and installed #fedora. 😅 I know, I know, not really a big leap into the unknown, but I've never tried it before. I've been using it for almost 6 months now and it's ok. I don't like it and I don't dislike it. My biggest issue is that Xorg seems broken (and I cannot figure out why) and I can only use Wayland to login. Wayland is just not quite there for my workflow.
Oh, I should also mention. I'm one of those #kdeplasma nut cases.
(Not really any comment on "stability" of arch, just that I can automate updates on Debian and never look back. On Arch I need to at least look at #informant to see if anything is up)
For Arch, my favorite desktop is #xfce , though I will occasionally check out the latest in the #kde#kdeneon world if I am spinning up a fresh laptop.
