@maegul Thanks for those lovely comments about blahaj, Hajkey and Kaity. She definitely is super awesome and I can't wait to see her contribution to Iceshrimp. I'm also really happy that @maikel has moved over too as he's tinkered with Hajkey code and his first pull request is based on some of that knowledge.
@jo
sorry this got buried and didn't see it until now. YES, I can confirm, the search engine was something I first notice on hajkey, made a quick find in bash to where was annoyingorance mentioned and told Kaity the places where the code needed editing to remove such awful choice of a search engine. Which of course she fixed speedily because she's awesome.
This new way (now merged with upstream) is the same but simpler since we moved out the location of the search engine out into two sane-defaults.js/ts files.
Is it worth having different accounts on different instances like as a backup?
I'm very happy where I am at the moment especially seeing the move/migration to #iceshrimp/#hajkey on blahaj.zone its a super cool idea :drgn_happy:
Just wondering if there been any times where an instances just dropped off without notice? It's actually my biggest fear with alot of things here on the fedi but I guess that's just the risk ones take here?
@jessica@Dragon Yeah it's happened a couple of times. More usually it's a small server with a handful of users. There was recent near miss a couple of months back when previous #mastodonau owner announced rapid close (and it became clear that he had begun it with a commercial return in mind that didn't eventuate). It set off a flurry of migrations, until another server's admin took it on. I have multiple backups thanks to testing all the various fediverse platforms. My new Iceshrimp alt is hosted on ambrosia.moe, but there's more listed here https://iceshrimp.fediverse.observer/
@Dragon@jessica The uptime issues were us trying to balance cost vs performance on AWS, whilst our lead sys admin recovers from an accident. Now that she's relatively recovered, we're moving off of AWS on to a dedicated setup. We're not going anywhere, and the performance issues will be resolved once we get off of AWS
For #blahajzone folks wondering why our #Hajkey / #Iceshrimp and #Lemmy servers (with ~8000 user accounts between them have been struggling lately. We're gonna try a new strategy to contain costs while our usership grows so there'll be some further backend migrations happening.
We're also gonna be merging the latest #Iceshrimp changes into #Hajkey. Hopefully will resolve more of the bugs than add new ones.
And I say we cos while not a mod or admin here, I'm user #9 who's been here using this as my main driver for a long time. I know these gals IRL, love them both to bits, and even when we disagree on fediverse stuff I have never lost trust in them.
Tbh, I'm on a proactively moderated server that has preemptively kept a lot of the worst folks from being able to reach us queers here, and the feedback from a handful of black users here is that #blahajzone has also been generally been harassment free in comparison to other servers they've been on.
Imo, it's actually not to hard as a queer or trans person to find #servers on the #fediverse that will protect you from harassment, but that it is harder to find servers that will also protect indigenous, black, Asian users from racist harassment. And too many queer white folks get a free pass for ignorance tbh, a privilege that many of us have had for far too long.
It's much the same on #Bluesky where I haven't been harassed for being #queer and trans - again there's large communities and plenty of allies - but anti-black racism has been in the spotlight again recently and the devs called out for lagging behind on safety and moderation features that bigots exploit for harassment campaigns.
Far too many fediverse projects are led by men, mostly white men, who are lionised, promoted and financed by another layer of mostly white men. They ultimately get the veto on minority protections.
Whenever I point out some racist content by white queers, or see BIPoC queers to point out racist content by white queers …the reaction is almost always the same: how dare we go against white queers, they have it so bad and are in need of protection by "fellow discriminated" not being stabbed in the back!
Result is: white LGBTQIA+ demand to be racist without being called out on racism and staying unpunished for being racists.
Especially BIPoC queers may seen as treasonous by white LGBTQIA
Dear @jo,
as long as the moderation of servers is not foremost being done by people suffering multi-discriminations and are e.g. from the global south, disabled BIPoC LGBTQIA+ themselves, I do NOT see, how the problems will be much better on your proactively moderated, preferred server, as the moderation is usually done by whites, who may see the issue but will hesitate reacting to racist shit BY white LGBTQIA+, possibly even more so, if the "opponent" is BIPoC but not LGBTQIA+!
See the problem?
@Dragon Good question. Not sure it's possible. Ping @ada & also pinging @april as this is definitely an accessibility issue that needs some consideration.
My follow request section has a blinking dot like there's something in there, but there isn't... How do i make it stop? #calckey#firefish#iceshrimp#hajkey
I hope #Hajkey keeps developing for blahaj.zone and similar communities, particularly the long sought after #FediverseSafety features that never seem to arrive on the #Fediverse and become more important as greater adoption occurs and user culture changes - like the amount of transphobic users that Lemmy has brought here and the dev bros think this is progress. #Firefish#Calckey#IceShrimp@maegul
