UK Telephone/FTTP question.

My parents have FTTP from EE. It came with a wall wart POTs adaptor, I had assumed that this was WiFi, but I'm starting to think it's DECT.

I can't seem to find anything online to confirm this.

started offering in my area.

It sounded quite tempting until I looked closer at their terms.

Residential packages:

  • 24 month contract
  • price goes up a tenner a month if you roll off the end
  • Use of their router reqd

If you want a static IP, or to put the router in bridging mode, you need a business pkg, which are all symmetric, so cost a good chunk more.

I'd be paying more for less.

I think I'll stick with @aaisp and wait for Openreach to get FTTP rolled out round here.

One year after signing up for Fibre to the premises, it's finally being rolled out in my area in the coming weeks. Not sure if my neighbours will notice the benefit but finally I will be able to harness the power of decent upload speeds and automate off-site backups. #fttp

Anyone else on #giganet? It appears they are kicking everyone on a #openreach #fttp connection off (transferring to ‘home telecom’). Sceptical of new provider - seems a low cost outfit. So who next. Ideally want a provide that will let me switch open reach->cityfibre once cabled up (house in plan, I’d expect it within 6-12 months)

In the process of having #NBN upgrade my #FTTC connection to #FTTP.

Yesterday, while I was not at home, an NBN tech came and installed the NBN Utility Box that lives on the outside of the home. They must have also dragged in the new fibre cable as well.

Howver they didn't run the new fibre cable in a conduit between the existing old Telstra connection point and into the Utility Box, but rather just strung it across (and not meeting any of NBN's own minimum bend radius requirements).

Not sure if I should be happy with the quality of this installation or not?

AT&T is sending out letters warning they want to kill virtually all landlines (and perhaps related data circuits where fiber is unavailable) across essentially their entire coverage area throughout California. This would have devastating effects. Related CPUC meetings will be taking place through March.

Landlines provide crucial services for individuals, businesses, and other organizations in a wide variety of situations -- not just emergencies when cellular and Internet service tends to rapidly fail, but also for vast numbers of people in areas with poor, unreliable, or in many cases (even in large sections of major cities!) NO cell service, NO fiber, etc.

Landlines often provide the only available communication in a wide variety of security and safety situations, from elevators to interior spaces of all sorts where cell service simply doesn't work.

Many disabled and other persons have crucial equipment that depends on landlines. Often they are not tech-savvy and do not have friends or relatives to help them through forced technology changes.

AT&T has been shirking its public safety responsibilities for years, while still leveraging their effective monopoly on services in so many areas.

Their new effort must be stopped. I'll have much more to say about this as the situation progresses.

bhawthorne,

@lauren We may differ on what “small areas” means, but it is clear that it is much harder building a fiber network in rural areas than in densely populated suburban or urban areas. We had to pull just as many miles of fiber and license just as many pole attachments as in an urban area, but we have just a few hundred premises to cover the overhead rather than tens or hundreds of thousands of premises. Because of our low-density, we pulled home run fibers to every premise, and left spare fibers for every undeveloped parcel or large parcels that could be turned into multiple lots without a subdivision plan. In a dense urban area, you would also split those fibers in the field.

A couple of dozen small towns in our area have all done the same, building municipally owned fiber to the premises. We have agreements with surrounding towns for combined diverse-path backhaul (currently 30GB backhaul for the 6 towns in our group). We have also contracted with the City of Westfield to be our ISP/NO. Westfield is overbuilding Comcast and Verizon in their city successfully. West Springfield is also doing the same. The City of Pittsfield is looking at doing the same, overbuilding Verizon and Spectrum.

I am not saying any of this is easy! It certainly is not. It took us 15 years from start to finish, federal (thanks Obama and Biden!) and state grants, and municipal borrowing. It is the largest infrastructure project our town has ever done. And it required the progressive regulatory environment of Massachusetts to prevent the incumbents from stopping it at the outset. But it is certainly doable, and the result is a robust communication system under the control of the people, and not a megacorporation.

peeps: do you need to get your own modem for if you upgrade to ?
Looking at plans because it looks like our house is eligible, but most of them are trying to sell a wifi modem with the plan. Since we have our own mesh wifi, I should just need a modem, and was assuming that this would come with the NBN fibre installation. Is this the case?
Will be nice not to have the internet speeds crater every time it rains and the Telstra pit floods.

Continuing the "why can't I get #FTTP when there's lit fibre right outside my gate" saga...

A couple of #openreach engineers turned up today so I went out for a chat. Yes, there is lit fibre right outside my house and what's there is the main junction for the cable going North back to the exchange, into the two villages East and West and then down to multiple villages to the South.

The engineers had turned up today to patch in a new customer in the village to the South.

Worcestershire along with most of the rest of England is having the Fibre to the home rolled out in large part due to the retiring of copper services. The stop sell of new connections happened at the end of last month.

Much of Worcestershire towns and villages had phone lines laid in trenches or trunking from the 60's onwards.

If it's in trenches then replacement would require laying cable. The contracts don't allow the cost for that, so they use telegraph poles instead.

Not just telegraph poles but up to 11 metre high poles, treated with creosote (being banned in 2025), with cables strung point to point in the air to homes.

In areas where there are no existing poles.

So 21st century infrastructure using 19th, early 20th century techniques.

No wonder there aren't just protest petitions but streets blockaded by the residents to prevent the placement of the poles.

Anyone have views on quality of after sales service from Exetel for 100Mbps or higher NBN services? I’m on FTTP at 100Mbps with Optus. I’ve never had a problem in the almost 8yrs I’ve had it, that wasn’t resolved in less than 12hrs, but I’m trying to cut costs or increase speed. So temptingly for the same money I pay per month for my Optus service I can get a 225Mbps service from Exetel, at least for the first 2 years with no lock-in, then the equivalent monthly cost goes up.

Hmm Monday's aren't that bad after all. Just got home and noticed Open Reach have started installing large telegraph poles around our end of the village which to me only means one thing. The old analogue telephone / VDSL ( Aluminium ) cables all run under ground here into the houses so this can only mean Fibre to premises via telegraph poles !
Could I really have 1Gb fibre before the year is out ? No more 30/3 VDSL. 😜 #Aberdeenshire #CrudenBay #FTTP

One for the UK #FTTP fans. I've just seen this ONT install in a Youtube video. Where can I get one of the little round fibre entry caps?
The BTOR guy made a complete dog's dinner of the plastering when he brought the fibre into mine, it'd be nice to cover the gaping hole and blown brick and plaster!

Today has started out well, it can surely only go downhill from here.
#Openreach engineer turned up outside my house this morning. Went out for a chat. Turned out he's a #fibre splicer connecting up a node right outside our drive with fibre running all over the place from there. He's already confirmed we have a lit feed from the exchange. Yay. He should be done in three days and then hand over to OR for commissioning. We should be able to order #FTTP within a fortnight. Double-plus yay!
