But today, its impossible height, it's precise orbital locking mechanism, and its radiation filtering windows were far from her mind. Even the view, filled with vast structures reaching toward the stars, was lacking its typical splendor.
Dad had finally accepted that job off-planet. This was her last ride up the elevator, and everything Finn loved was being left behind.
@whknott The flight to planet Shab'k was uneventful. Restful. Yet Ka-na debarked with some trepidation.
"Finding Capa leaders underground will be difficult & very dangerous," she recalled Commander Po lecturing her. "Do not take this assignment lightly."
She would not.
As she walked toward the elevators to realms below she stole a last glance at the blue sky of Shab'k. "If I survive, I'd like to visit the floating city someday."
An elevator arrived. She turned away from the sky. "Not today."
Lt. Townsend reported the launch status over the intercom, “We’re ‘Go’ for launch. Twenty seconds and counting. Guidance is internal. Ten seconds. Ignition sequence starts. We have liftoff.” He looked up at the surveillance monitors. “@#$% … there’s a little girl in the shuttle observation deck.”
“Every day is a chance to start over,” Ally thought.

Every day at 10:35 AM, Connie goes to her room's window, and look in direction to the west. It's been like this since her family moved here from Earth, 2 years ago. "She loves the blue sky", her parents say. "Look at her, lost in her thoughts". And they're right. She's lost. And found. They can't see the transfer tower the former residents left when they fled from this planet. It's been loading the youth's brains with the data they'll need to fight the coming war… #WritingPrompt

That mural's the highlight of elementary school tours. Every kid knows Sandi started at 4, was advising engineers at 8, and in production at 10. Of course we leave out the darker parts: the missing childhood, the military work, the breakdown.
But I hear she has a new company and is talking to a fusion startup: whatever she's designing needs a ton of power. #MicroFiction
