After what feels like a gazillion years, I've finally caved and bought a cleaning robot, and now I'm watching it navigate the obstacle course that is our home.

Currently considering where to stick the googly eyes...

gothnbass,

@jens We stuck them on the front, in the usual binocular pattern.

It didn't occur to me until just now that this is the characteristic pattern of sight-oriented predators, because this is a feline household. It comes naturally.

In case it's helpful inspiration: you can buy googly-eyes in bulk, which means "biblically correct robotic vacuum-cleaner" is an option.
It's also a phrase that should neatly trigger apoplexy in a susceptible portion of the Fediverse, so it has that going for it, too!

@gothnbass It has cameras in front, so I'm thinking more along the lines of some creative top decoration.

But yes, clusters of eyes like some spiders may be a good idea 🤔

The manual explains that the robot first divides the room into zones, and then fills the zones in triangle patterns (so basically polygon triangulation), but I've got to ask, what "zones" can it find when there are toys on the floor that it pushes around.

Is this cruelty to robots? Will I hasten the day Skynet takes over with this stuff?

Suffice to say that of course I did NOT attach the device to our WiFi, and did NOT download an app.

So whatever happens, it stays in this house.

If I don't post anything for a week, call help.

It mostly finished one room and is exploring the second now. Not flawless, but great for keeping up with the kid's daily chaos production.

IamMrsGeek,

@jens I have one but lost the manual and remote for it so it goes wherever it wants which means I have to rescue it a lot and it’s not very effective. Lol

randomgeek,

@IamMrsGeek @jens in addition, the animals have a joint offensive against the robot: Jumpy Dog attacks it when it moves, and the cats attack it when it's sleeping.

@randomgeek @IamMrsGeek Evil.

Our tortoise might try to bump it out of her territory.
