In the United States, women didn't have the legal right to apply for credit cards separate from their husbands until 1974.

@margaretgarigan How about that.🙄

sigrithur,

@StillIRise1963 women were not allowed to wear pants on the floor of the US house of representatives until 1992

rechtkonziliant,

@StillIRise1963 Women's voting and election rights at the federal level was introduced in Switzerland through a nationwide referendum held exclusively among the male population (!) in 1971! Switzerland was thus one of the last European countries to grant full citizenship rights to its female population.

@StillIRise1963 I am reading Julie Suk's After Misogyny: How the Law Fails Women and What to Do about It. It provides a helpful frame about why we are still struggling in the US.

"The laws of misogyny underestimate or belittle women’s contributions, while allowing men and society to benefit from and depend upon women’s sacrifices. The misogynist is more parasite then predator."

“Other countries have social safety nets, the US has women.”

@StillIRise1963 blue cross and blue shield insurance covered female genitalia mutations up until 1977. It got banned in 1996. It is a felony to preform this on anyone under 18.

@StillIRise1963 Indeed... but that still wasn't the worst thing done to them... 👀

toxtethogrady,

@StillIRise1963 I remember those days. It is a reminder how male-centric the world was up until Women's Lib (and even thereafter)...

@StillIRise1963 Ah, this must be the "America" that MAGAts want to make "Great" again.

ArtSmart,
@ArtSmart@mas.to avatar

@StillIRise1963 What changed that right in 1974? If a law, then great. If a SCOTUS decision, then we can expect the Clarence Thomas Court to reverse that right.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@ArtSmart The Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974.

del,

@StillIRise1963 @angelicfruitcake For a country based on liberty and freedom of speech it’s surprisingly good at restricting both.

@del Was it ever really based on that or is that propaganda? 🤔 @angelicfruitcake

del,

@StillIRise1963 @angelicfruitcake I don’t know, I’m British.

I’m sad we were only too happy to wave off ships full of our religious zealots way back in history. We must have thought thank goodness they’ve gone.

Imagine what America could have been if only we had encouraged our scientists and left-wing liberals to go colonise it instead!

@StillIRise1963 Similar here (germany): My mom needed the allowance of her husband to open a bank account; he had the 'right' to withdraw money w/o her permission. If she wanted to buy sth. expensive, she needed his signature.
At least she already had the right to vote, unlike in Switzerland...
