fellow geoworks lovers and related operating system outcasts:

does anyone know how/where the GeoWorks 1.x/2.x system bitmap fonts are stored?

i'm speaking specifically about the fonts used throughout the UI, and the one used on the splash screen for "Ensemble 2.0"

i've spent hours trying to figure this out, and i'm not much closer

@vga256 I don't, but I just wanted to say, Geoworks was pretty amazing for its time. The difference between the output from Geoworks and any other word processing app on a dot matrix printer was night and day (as was how much ribbon you went through, but that's another story)

@ve3qbz i've heard the same from others, many times! it included some pretty incredible fonts too, compared to Win 3.1 at the time.

@vga256 I used Geoworks 1.0, I wonder if Windows 3.1 hadn't even released yet? I'm pretty sure truetype fonts came after Geoworks 1.0 in the Windows world, though I could be misremembering. That or I couldn't run Windows 3.1 on my XT :)

@ve3qbz oh wow, yep that was early! I used GeoWorks 2.0 over at a friend’s house at the time, and we had Windows 2.0 at home 😖

@ve3qbz oh and - i just remembered something: iiirc win 3.1 required a 286! I believe it required the Protected Mode memory map on the 286 and higher

@vga256 I think you are right - Win 3.1 would only operate in standard or enhanced mode, not real mode, if I remember correctly.

@ve3qbz yup exactly. we had an amstrad XT at the time, and we could only run win2.0 on it. we made a leap to a 486 SX-33 because my mom needed win3.1 for her SPSS course 😆

@vga256 OMG! It's been decades since I last heard this name: Geoworks
My dad used to use it to prepare his courses (he was a teacher). I played a fair bit with this suite as a child.
Thanks for taking me down memory lane

@edo999 😆 i think about it every once in a while, and i still adore the pixel art icons it used.

@vga256 I saw your followup post, so it looks like you found it. I just wanted you to know that there’s a fellow GeoWorks lover out there (me!) who’s following the hashtag. I re-visit this post every now and then when I want nostalgia-type feelings: https://tedium.co/2019/06/20/geoworks-geos-history/

@sillygwailo haha, that's @ernie - my favourite piece of his writing over the years 😄
