Weird question: Is it a bad idea to buy a radio like the DX10 from a ham-I-don't-know at a ham fest or on QRZ / eBay? Or just buy new?

ve3qbz,
@ve3qbz@mastodon.radio avatar

@bud_t @ai6yr @Geojoek "golden screwdrivers" are a huge no - no mods, I don't care who you are, you could work for Yaesu and I'd turn it down (well..probably, I guess..but in general haha). And we know the other kind of ham we are talking about here, that you don't want to buy gear from.

fellow geoworks lovers and related operating system outcasts:

does anyone know how/where the GeoWorks 1.x/2.x system bitmap fonts are stored?

i'm speaking specifically about the fonts used throughout the UI, and the one used on the splash screen for "Ensemble 2.0"

i've spent hours trying to figure this out, and i'm not much closer

ve3qbz,
@ve3qbz@mastodon.radio avatar

@vga256 I don't, but I just wanted to say, Geoworks was pretty amazing for its time. The difference between the output from Geoworks and any other word processing app on a dot matrix printer was night and day (as was how much ribbon you went through, but that's another story)

ve3qbz,
@ve3qbz@mastodon.radio avatar

@vga256 I used Geoworks 1.0, I wonder if Windows 3.1 hadn't even released yet? I'm pretty sure truetype fonts came after Geoworks 1.0 in the Windows world, though I could be misremembering. That or I couldn't run Windows 3.1 on my XT :)

ve3qbz,
@ve3qbz@mastodon.radio avatar

@vga256 I think you are right - Win 3.1 would only operate in standard or enhanced mode, not real mode, if I remember correctly.

Quite a successful day operating FT8. Slightly marred when a Shannon denier arrived to tell me digital modes are “not real radio” ie not CW or Voice. I’d like to have seen him work Brazil, Australia and Turkey with QRP on 28MHz on the day after massive solar storms wiped out the short wave bands. Not impossible, but why restrict yourself to pre-1948 communications modes? I don’t get it. Unless it’s for historical re-enactment or to keep ancient equipment running. Or you just don’t like progress?

ve3qbz,
@ve3qbz@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0CUV I'm confused - someone on FT8 told you FT8 wasn't ham radio?

The conservation area I live next to has a small marina in it, and every summer, they have a boat auction - maybe it's common, but it surprises me people abandon or forfeit boats. Yes, they are usually pretty beat, but we're talking cheap.

I am completely smitten by the design of this boat, and I suspect it's one that will go up for auction. I've never seen a small sailboat with an enclosed bridge/cabin like that up top - it's SOOO FREAKING cool imo.

I wonder if it will go up for auction?

Small sailboat up on stands. It has a raised cabin up top, unlike a lot of flatter topped sailboats.

@vga256 Oh I'm all too aware. It's a bad idea on top of a bad idea, fueled by a fixation.

I don't even know if it will go up for auction, but its on stands in the RV parking area where they usually hold the auction; it wasn't wintered there (they have a storage area onsite), it was placed there, and its far from the docks at this point, so I have to think its an auction boat.

Such a bad idea. So so bad.

@vga256 I struggle to keep the lawn mowed and ivy on the side of the house from overtaking the roof, and I somehow think I can maintain a second piece of property that is essentially on the verge of sinking at all times but for the grace of fiberglass.

The one ace in the hole here is I could literally walk to this marina.

Boats make offroading the jeep look cheap though, that's a huge problem lol

Inspired by late night mastodon.radio conversations, I put in a low-ball best offer on a TRS-80 Model 102, not expecting it to be accepted, but it was. So I guess TNC field packet is a go? What have I done? 😜 🤠

Looks minty. I will order a replacement RAM backup battery and a re-cap kit just in case (battery certainly needs to be replaced), that's like $20 in parts. And a DB-25 to DB-9 RS-232 cable.

Yesterday, MFJ Enterprises announced that they would be closing down their manufacturing facilities in Starkville, Mississippi effective May 17th, but would continue selling their wide selection of imported products including portable/mobile antennas, power supplies, clocks, and antenna switches. This closure also impacts all of their sub-brands: Ameritron, Hy-Gain, Cushcraft, Mirage and Vectronics.

the only funny thing about recovering 400GB of lost photos is that i found out this Transcend 480GB SSD was previously owned by someone else, despite me buying it "new" from an electronics store a few years ago. someone very clearly used it for a while, returned it, and they put it back on the shelf.

photorec and testdisk are very good at finding deleted stuff, and this was obviously their itunes media folder, and they were big into the planet smashers 😅

My daughter brought home the boyfriend for the Easter weekend - this is the classic "meet the parents" visit, I guess, and the first time ever in our family.

He looks at my computer screen and asks "oh, what distro are you using, my laptop is running Arch".

So good.
