@vicgrinberg I'll second the suggestion of Iain M Banks. A wonderful man I was lucky enough to actually get to know a bit.

@TacticalGrace_ oh wow! I only come around to his books pretty late, after his death. But they have somehow become true comfort reads when the worlds becomes too much (I know, I am strange like that ...).

@vicgrinberg I don't think that's strange at all. I feel the exact same way. I've got a nice hardback copy of Matter that Iain gifted to me, and then signed for me, when I met up with him in Glasgow back in 2009. He was a great man, a wonderful author, and there's a lot of him in his work. Outside of the Culture novels, I can also recommend, if you haven't read them yet, Feersum Endjinn, and most of his regular fiction work, too.

@TacticalGrace_ I've read Feersum Endjinn - which I loved a lot! Haven't read his mainsteam novels yet, also because I've been told they are less of a comfort ... But I definitely have them on my to read list!

@vicgrinberg I'm glad you've read that, it is genuinely one of my favourites. I would recommend caution when it comes to his regular fiction work, particularly The Wasp Factory, as that has some incredibly dark themes to it.

I bought a copy to read on the flight back to Bavaria from the UK, and finished it in about 3 hours. I'd only consider reading that on a nice bright sunny day, and when you're in a happy head space, or it could be quite unpleasant.

@TacticalGrace_ Yep, that's in good agreement with how the book was recommended to me! Waiting for a summer day with lots of sun and little news.
