How do you feel about the US university occupations and encampments in support of Gaza?

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

Wow. About 90% positive, and 2/3 strongly positive. I'm somewhat positive.

@evan The lack of Hamas opposition perplexes me.

@Grant_M Do you think that a protest encampment at Columbia University is a good way to put pressure on Hamas to release the hostages? I don't think the university has a lot of investments in Hamas-related companies, but maybe that should be added to the list of demands for disclosure and divestment.

Grant_M,
@Grant_M@mastodon.social avatar

@evan I think it will show that the protestors do not support Hamas which will in turn increase wider support for the protests.

@evan
Maybe they should proclaim themselves vegan and only ride bicycles, that would increase wider support for the protests.

Or perhaps they know Palestine is not Hamas?

Grant_M,
@Grant_M@mastodon.social avatar

@vesperto @evan People looking in from the outside -- the majority -- would greatly support the cause if they were certain it didn't in any way support Hamas.

I want this to be a successful and worthwhile endeavor with mass support.

Educate the masses. Seemed easier a few decades ago.

@vesperto @evan I try to do my small part.

@evan The impression I get from the news is that such occupations/encampments generally contain elements who cross two critical lines: from pro-Palestinian to pro-Hamas and from anti-Israeli-government-policy to anti-local-Jews. Hence I'm negative overall.

I would like to believe that such elements are merely a radical fringe, condemned by the vast majority of protesters. I welcome evidence to that effect.

@mpjgregoire @evan
Where are you getting your news? That's not the characterization I've seen in the mainstream center-right leaning outlets I tend to read.

Fair enough.

Here's a centrist article from the , citing in particular President Biden about antisemitic elements: https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/us-campus-protests-israel-gaza-1.7181868

Here's an article from the : https://nationalpost.com/news/world/pro-palestinian-protests-break-out-in-u-s-universities-following-arrests-at-columbia

Here's an article from Canada's right-wing newspaper, the with more specifics of pro-Hamas and anti-Jewish incidents at Columbia: https://nationalpost.com/news/mobs-of-people-that-want-me-dead-columbia-university-moves-classes-online-amid-massive-anti-israel-protests

Ugly incidents certainly do occur at large protests. The degree to which we should consider such incidents aberrant or revealing, exceptional or typical, is hard to judge.

@mpjgregoire
the same assessment brings me to somewhat positive, because the mobilisation is still important and i trust that such elements don't need to be numerous to be very visible, and thus not necessarily representative. Distinctions need to be made.
