@Grant_M Do you think that a protest encampment at Columbia University is a good way to put pressure on Hamas to release the hostages? I don't think the university has a lot of investments in Hamas-related companies, but maybe that should be added to the list of demands for disclosure and divestment.
@vesperto@evan People looking in from the outside -- the majority -- would greatly support the cause if they were certain it didn't in any way support Hamas.
I want this to be a successful and worthwhile endeavor with mass support.
@evan The impression I get from the news is that such occupations/encampments generally contain elements who cross two critical lines: from pro-Palestinian to pro-Hamas and from anti-Israeli-government-policy to anti-local-Jews. Hence I'm negative overall.
I would like to believe that such elements are merely a radical fringe, condemned by the vast majority of protesters. I welcome evidence to that effect.
@mpjgregoire@evan
Where are you getting your news? That's not the characterization I've seen in the mainstream center-right leaning outlets I tend to read.
@ian
Ugly incidents certainly do occur at large protests. The degree to which we should consider such incidents aberrant or revealing, exceptional or typical, is hard to judge.
@mpjgregoire
the same assessment brings me to somewhat positive, because the mobilisation is still important and i trust that such elements don't need to be numerous to be very visible, and thus not necessarily representative. Distinctions need to be made. @evan
