@pixelcats (This reply might be a bit rambly). OK, so I think 50% of this whole mess is most deffo misogyny. Which we all know is rampant in SK. So, I can see some aspects of this attempt (?) to oust her as "The Good Ole Boys Club" bs--doubly so cuz so many male execs are garbage.
THAT SAID, the other 50% is deffo from MHJ herself. Especially in the way that she's often taken ALL OF THE CREDIT (short of singing and dancing) for NewJeans' success. Like, I remember reading a few interviews when NJ debuted, and I legit cannot remember her thanking the members for their efforts or any other kind of credit. It was all MJH, all the time. Which, at the time, I found v., v. weird and off-putting.
It's not that I wanted to see her be humble per se. But a hat tip to the NJ's members would've been nice, IMO.
Re ILLIT's concept: ehhh. I mean, yeah, they do sport a similarlish look to the one NJs had in "Attention", but then... a good 80-90% of all ggs (yes, ALL) have sported >
@pixelcats >the (now classic, I guess) NJ's Y2K look. Hell, even Red Velvet wore v. similar fits during the comeback for "Birthday". I'm guessing MHJ is complaining abt ILLIT because this is a case of that look being sported by a group within the same main company (HYBE)? So it feels too close to home perhaps.
In the end, my feelings abt this are as such:
It sucks that this whole thing is happening when we're v. close to the next NJ's comeback.
MHJ's ego (and potentially greed?) got to her.
My only concern here is for NewJeans. I truly don't know what kind of relationship dynamic they have with MHJ, but I do feel somewhat worried abt them all the same.
MHJ vs. HYBE is translating to me as rich ppl fighting, so I'm Team No One here. Again, I'm only hoping that NewJeans ends up coming out of this unscathed or, with as little harm as possible. 🤷🏽♀️ /end
@Glittery Yeah all of this. Mhj clearly plays a part in the chaos, and I agree re: rich people fighting .. so boring. But if they mess up NJs comeback we"re gonna have to riot or send trucks or something. :blobcatgiggle:
Seriously though I am worried about those girls too .. so young and talented, but they don't have the agency that long-established groups have to push back. I hope they make it thru this mess ok.
@pixelcats Although I don't think they've got as much power as, say, BTS or SVT (in terms of seniority w/r/t HYBE), I'd say they are tremendously popular. One would think that neither HYBE nor ADOR wants to see them fall from grace, so to speak.
@tikistitch@pixelcats Ditto (all pun intended, heheh.) Though I'm comforted by HYBE CEO's message to ADOR employees (including NJs) as well as BELIFT Labs. Like, not in the 'awww, what a good guy" way, mind you. But it was reassuring to see him voice his support of NJs and ILLIT.
Given that I have minimal understanding of South Korean corporate culture, that sounds like something I'd expect a CEO to say, clear and reassuring. I'm glad he talked about supporting the young artists, which would be my greatest concern amid all the chaos. 💜 Of course, saying and doing are two different things, so I'll be watching what happens.
@pixelcats There's only so many ways you can have a girl group concept so eventually some will really overlap, I think. It's hard to differentiate nowadays.
@pixiecata True .. but part of NJs success was that they were a bit individual when they debuted - the streetwear styling, the much more structured choreo etc. Min Hee-jin has made so much magical content, but always the drama too. Part of me wonders if it's misogyny because she's such a creative force. 🤷🏻♀️
