vacapinta,

C. is learning Moden Greek and we are both blown away that there is no word for foot or for hand. Two things that seem obvious to us as separate body parts but then you realize...maybe not.

@vacapinta I just found out that Old English still had no word for #nature, and a book explains that they didn't think yet in opposites to nature: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2021/nov/09/the-wordhord-daily-life-in-old-english-a-lexical-treasure-chest

Would be interesting to ask #Greek people about their body perception!

@vacapinta And how do they say in Greek? Deepl.com offers me Χέρι ή πόδι (hand or foot)?

vacapinta,

@NatureMC But πόδι also translates as 'leg'

@vacapinta Ah, thank you! I just imagine being at the doctor, so I have to point to the exact place? It's fascinating!
Would be interesting if other languages, too, have this phenomenon.

vacapinta,

@NatureMC if you loo k at the Wiki entry for foot and then look for other languages you will see like 100 other languages and a note that there is no entry in Greek!! (Ελληνικά)

@vacapinta ok but Wiki(pedia) isn't a reference for completeness.😉

@vacapinta Interesting that the parts of the foot have own words. Thank you for showing this!
