@craiggrannell Tip. An AMD based mini PC plus a primary ChimeraOS drive makes for a very nice, immediate gaming experience on a tv.

@marksemczyszyn I’ll give that consideration should the nipper ever tear herself away from the Switch and the Mac mini keel over. The mini + Batocera is now collecting dust, alas. (I’d also need a silent PC, which I understand isn’t common – what are you using?)

@craiggrannell posted some stuff over the weekend about it. The HP still. Couldn’t get chimera on an external ssd to start reliably - always a black screen. And putting everything back together, the primary SATA ZIF connector broke. So ripped out the windows disk and popped chimera in the NVME slot. Booted perfectly. Have tried a few games in the library and all fine apart from T4K.

@craiggrannell There’s loads of AMD mini options out there. Silent is tough but very quiet isn’t.

@craiggrannell in fact it’s the updated version - updated cooling and an extra slot for an internal Nvme. So two of them. Which is very tempting for bare bones.

@craiggrannell hmm. This updated version may have issues booting Linux. I’ll read up some more. The original M5 had no issues. Bloody good price though.

@craiggrannell Nah. Easy. NX mode in bios is like a secure boot thing now. Disable it and you can install what you want. I’m going to price up some RAM later and maybe pull the trigger while it’s on flash sale. Will be a better performer than the HP.

@craiggrannell So. It might be a little long in the tooth. So my gut says stick with the HP and review in a few months. You should keep an eye on Robtech on YT. You’ll find your almost perfect under tv box at some point. But deffo AMD is the best way forward.

@marksemczyszyn One for the future, I think. By some miracle, I got my RGB30 up and running within a few days of it arriving, but I can’t imagine I’ll have time to sort another unit, nor play on it. And the Mini does all the way up to GC without breaking a sweat. So whatever I get next really needs to be a quantum leap on from that, in the same way I’m not bothering replacing my 353M and Pocket 3+ until cost-effective handhelds play eg PS2 perfectly with zero faffing.

@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@marksemczyszyn (I know me. I’d buy a mini PC and it’d sit in a box for a year.)

marksemczyszyn,
@marksemczyszyn@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell ha. I know. I get it. But after Batocera killed itself, I realised I didn’t use that pc for anything other than firing up windows to play steam for a bit - like 30 mins a time - or a quick RetroBat session. So there had to be a better way forward. And there was. Just watch the techdweeb video for the state of how things are now.

@marksemczyszyn I’m increasingly coming to a kind of ‘sealed box’ mentality with these things. Do they work? Great. Leave them alone, forever. I’ve no idea what version of Batocera is on my Mac mini, but the one that’s on there is fine. (Exception: I’d update my 35XX if FB Neo would start working with vertical arcade games. Although I use the RGB30 for those now…)

@craiggrannell That’s what I was looking for. Appliance grade device. Batocera was ok for me till I updated 38 to 39. Then it died. And I figured by bother messing around with it to restore - which I could. But it’s time I couldn’t be bothered to give. Steam just works. Unless you fiddle with it.
